You've got me there. Good reply !!!!

I still maintain the 22 mag is great fit when you just don't need to move up to 223, but want more than a 22lr

No.

Shoot a turkey with a .223 and one with a 22mag, see which one gives you the larger meal.

I don't eat the heads, anyway.

The ammo availability is a big deal.

Yup. You can find .223 anywhere.

Buy a Hornet instead. You can roll your own. Different power levels, and you can enjoy reloading it.

If we all only bought what we needed the firearm industry would perish.

I owned one and it killed small game well but was not cheap to shoot like a 22 rimfire so I sold it.

five Marlin 57 M on GunBroker yesterday. Prices all over the place. most found by searching 57 rather than 57M.

Just saying.

Given the center fire offerings in the 56 I am curious as to why Marlin never offered a clip feeder 56M.

KBob,

I myself have wondered why Marlin never introduced a box magazine version of the 22 mag:confused:

As for the now increased availability of the 57M it does seem like over the past three years there have been more for sale. I think it might be related the scarcity of 22 mag ammunition.

I managed to find a " safe queen " about 4 years ago with the help of a friend who owned a gun shop . I ran across a few over the years that were either in to rough of a shape or to pricey. I have come to a point in my life now where I consider what it will be like when I hand each firearm that I buy over to my grandchildren as part of my decision to buy. Yep that's right I'm old ;)

Also I feel I should apologize to the OP . I think I might have accidentally hijacked your thread. I'm sorry for that.

Do you need a 22 mag ? Only you can say for sure. ...... Do you want a 22 mag? Yes you do.:)

Some of the "M"s (.22 WMR) are not in fact marked as such - that is, with "M"s.

My magnum marked 57 is 57 only so it certainly does pay to look at all non "M" marked rifles if a fella wants a WMR.

Todd.

I admit, one reason I have a .22mag rifle is because I bought the PMR 30 and I like the idea of having at least two guns that fire the same ammo. I ended up buying a lever action .22mag Henry because, at that time, did not have a lever action rifle and wanted one.

I think the reason more Marlin 56/57 are on the market these days is because folks that bought them new when they were in production are either passed and the kids got them and see a few bucks off gran rather than a neat gun or they are getting rid of them themselves as they start thinking about assisted living.

Same thing happened a decade ago with Jap 7.7 and 6.5 service rifles as the vets started to die off.

Sad.

As to getting a Hornet instead, what can you do with a Hornet you can not do with hand loading for a .223?

I note the 5mmRF guys have a small primer center fire alteration to cover their needs, though they need bolt work for a centerfire firing pin if I understand correctly. Wonder if there would be a market for such ammo and rifle alterations among the .22 WRFM crowd. Specially if one could have two bolts to swap out.
