I was watching Hannity and Colmes talk about the USS Iowa flap last night. They had some nutjob get on tv and, after insulting the ship as being a big ugly thing coverd with giant guns, he said how he felt the military has done nothing good for us in the last 5 years. He also said that the military could be replaced by the police.

...Our leo friends might be needing this >.>

Then theres the mess with getting reckognition for Pappy Boyingon, and the recruiters being put off campus, and the protests of returning wounded soldiers from Afganistan and Iraq.

It leads me to ask if soldiers are now considerd a bad influence in America.

Some of the best men I have ever known were military men. This include my two grandfathers(WWII), great uncle(Korea), two uncles(Vietnam Era) and my future brother-in-law(Force Recon just deployed to Iraq). So, from my personal experience, military men can make great role models.

That's just like the Univ of Washington student senate voting down a memorial to Pappy Boyington because Marines aren't the kind of people that UW wants to produce..... :banghead:

I saw that episode also. That guy was VERY far out. He thought that the U.S. should go totally without ANY form of military. Even the weisel Alan Colmes chastised the man saying that a military is vital for our countries security. I'm not over-reacting when I say that guy made Alan Colmes look like a member of the vast right-wing conspiricy.

(I served in the Army so I am definitely biased on the side of the Military)

In Pappy's case, he lived hard and drank hard. He probably wasn't an easy guy to get along with, and he alienated a lot of his friends. But every man makes mistakes, and no one is perfect.

In general, I'd say soldiers are good role models, though obviously non-soldiers are just as worthy of consideration. My grandfather was a colonel, and I respect him almost as much as I respect my father, who never served in any military.

I don't know where you live, I've seen no such disrespect in Mississippi.

With all the left leaning of the media, it is no wonder that most see military men as poor role models. Cause, if it's on TV, it must be true! :barf:

I do not think that is the case. Most all military men I have ever had the privilege of meeting have been nothing short of great examples of how we all should be.

When I was a kid, I didn't know Mickey Mantel from the man in the moon. ( And I was a kid in the 50 and 60's) But I sure knew who Roger Young was. And Audie Murphy. Most of my hero's were fighter pilots. Bob Johnson, Robert L. Scott, Richard Bong, Pappy Boyington, Joe Foss, Chuck Yeager, and a bunch of others.

I might not of turned out too good, but it sure wasn't those men's fault.

No POLL was necessary with this post, for the outcome would be quite obvious.

As far as the Hannity & Colmes show on FOX news, the idiot that was interviewed and said that the USA doesn't need military forces was a San Francisco City Councilman! More and more, the City of San Francisco has become anti-American, anti-Democratic (not the political party), PRO-Communist, PRO-homosexual, PRO-leftist Liberal and TOTALLY insane!

If you folks haven't listened to the "Michael Savage" talk radio show, try to find a local radio station that carries it. Savage LIVES in San Francisco! He's not the ONLY conservative who lives there, but you might think so! For that matter, the State of California (NO, not the "Republik of California" or "Kalifornicate") tends to be RETURNING to a more conservatively-minded society, overall! NOW, all we need is to get the idiotic liberal "representatives" in office bounced out!

Sorry for the "rant", but I'm not about to abandon ship, and have been fighting for California for many, many years! It really hurts to see the posts where GOOD people leave California just because of the insane gun laws! FIGHT for the rights!

Our liberal academic institutions, combined with leftist and often times anti-american academicians, have done much to condemn the military and the soldier with their leftist propaganda under the guise of an education. Contrary to this is the military's distinguished record of accomplishment through our history. In response to your question, yes, soldiers make excellent role models: every one!

Our first president and our latest president were soldiers. Almost every one in between had some association with the military. Many sports celebrities were soldiers before they were sportsmen; the ethic of the soldier is one in which we should extol to every student.

Those that defend our freedom represent it best
. I honor every soldier and often shed a tear when I hear of their lives cut short in defense of our freedom. When did you ever hear of a leftist academic who gave his or her life for their belief?

We need to turn around our society, which today gives soldiers a backhand slap. We need to mandate military service as a prerequisite to civilian service. We need to honor our history of soldier first; civilian second.

Do Soldiers make bad role models? You tell me:

The three finest men I have ever known were soldiers.
The three basest men I have ever known were soldiers.
the roughly 550 most despicable people I have ever seen, or heard of, or about are politicians.

Overall soldiers are fine examples to everyone. Generally dedicated, loyal and brave. :D ;) :)

Politicians.......well  :fire: :banghead: :cuss: :barf:

Just a "yes" vote to get the taste of the blatant rah-rah hagiography and required adoration of anything in a uniform out of my mouth.

Soldiers are soldiers. Some are good people. Some are evil. Most are no better or worse than anyone else. The mystical near-worship of the military that seems to be creeping into the American consciousness is frightening. Up until now it was the one part of the classic definitions of fascism that we haven't crept up to.

Zen21Tao and Camp David +1

My apologies to others who likely wrote similar things;I admit to just skimming quickly today. I'm hurrying off to work.

Zen, your moniker looked interesting so I read your public profile. "Hate commie liberals"....proof that soldiers are not all bad:D

My kids are okay, in my slightly biased opinion, and they had to put up with this ex-soldier's example during their formative years.:p

I can't vote on your poll. The ex-soldiers I know are great people. They come in my store for for CB equipment & we chat about all kinds of things. They are the kind of folks that if I go into the back for a item, I don't have to worry about them shoving something under their coat. But I know that there has to be a few bad apples in bunch. Natural law.
