My uncle has a old Ruger 357 he doesnt know much about it and describes it over the phone he says he cant find a serial number at all and something on the gun indicates it was made for police,he may just be old n confused i am not sure,do you know anything? Thanks

Serial numbers did not used to be required. The GCA of 1968 required them. I had a pair of Remington 22s with no serial number and a pederosoli rolling block with no serial number.

Edit: Did not notice it was a Ruger revolver. See below.

It should have a serial number on it.

Ruger numbered all their pistols, especially the double action models.
Either he's not seeing it or it's been removed, which means it's a Federal crime to have it.

It is a Ruger Service Six says Police on it and has no serial number on it at all
It had better have one on it somewhere. :scrutiny::uhoh:

It has been too long since I owned my Security-Six to be certain, but I think it was on the side of the frame in plain view. Try taking the grips off and see if the number is hidden by them, perhaps on the bottom of the butt.

I have a single shot Winchester bolt action .22 that once belonged to my great grandmother. Near as I can tell no serial number anywhere on the gun. My grandfather has no idea when she bought it. It looks to be a Winchester 67 or 67A. He gave it to me when my grandmother died. Near as I can find out, none of the 300k of them that were produced had serial numbers.:what:

The revolver subject of the OP had to have had a SN. This is a modern gun made long after SN were required. Look again. Take the grips off. It's got to be there or you'll be able to see where it was removed (illegally).

The S/N on the Security/Service/Speed Six revolvers is on the butt of the frame. Remove the grips and it'll be there.

The SN will be on the bottom of the grip frame. All Ruger revolvers have a SN.

There is a number under the grips not on the butt of the gun but i'd say about a inch give or take above the butt on the side, holding the gun this is on the left side...is this the serial number?

Do any certain parts have numbers if not i would think it is the serial number but it is on a part of the gun that looks like this piece could be removed but not totally sure i just glanced it over

All modern revolvers must have a serial number by law.

All Rugers ever made have a serial number.

Prior to the 1968 gun control act, many cheap .22 rifles & shotguns did not have a serial number because it was not required.

After the 1968 GCA, all fireams must have a serial number.

Lets take firearms without serial numbers a bit further.

On a FFL to FFL out of state transfer into California. Can I bring in an antique pistol (pre-1900's) that has neither a serial number, model number or the name of the manufacturer on it?

It would be better for you to re-post this in the legal section. As it is now, very, very few people will see your question.

And you're going to tell them you are bringing lots of "calillegal" guns into the state...None of their collective business...!!

Most every firearm you own is or will be illegal in the USSR of C...

Some older guns do NOT have serial numbers...

I have a Mossberg 500 of around 1963 vintage..no s/n
Also have an OLD Marlin 99..again, no s/n.

As far as I know, ALL Rugers made have s/n's somewhere on them.
