do those no-drill scope mounts for garands scratch up the receiver?

The offset mounts, including the original Griffin & Howe (sp?) all have the same problem -- the scope isn't in line with the barrel! You're going to need a leather cheek pad for the offset head position, too.

Why not look into the forward scout mounts? (Amega Ranges, CMP and Fulton Armory all carry these.) These replace the rear handguard, permit use of the existing iron sights, and also provide "in-line" mounting of a IER scope or red dot.

I've seen a Garand with a Aimpoint mounted low, and it looked functional.

I have an Eotech that mounts on my Garand, and I'm very pleased with it. (The appearance is a little jarring, combining old and new, but it works!)

As to your original question, from reading about the S&K mount, it has a screw that goes through the ears and two more that bear down on the receiver to permit "leveling" These may scratch the receiver, but it will be under the iron sights if they are reinstalled, I think.

thanks d.

i was only thinking about the rear mount ones because i have several high quality scopes laying around, but they are all standard rifle scopes with average eye relief.

i wouldnt rule out the forward mounted ones though if they hold zero and i could find a decent scope with at least 6-7x magnification.

my whole reasoning behind glassing the old rifle is just how bad my eyes have gotten. lol.

maybe what i should consider first is glasses, lol.

i dont think i could do contacts, i cant even stand to put drops in my eyes, much less my finger to put in a contact.

The S&K mount replaces the rear sight, as you know. They can be a snug fit and, if snug, would cause some abrasion of the sight ears.

The aperture in the S& K is adjustable for elevation only, not windage.

I will hold scope steady. The scope does sit very high.
