I'm an NRA lifer and a new GOA member. I also vote, write letters, and make phone calls. I tell people that it's important to belong to one of these organizations to help protect their 2nd Amend. rights because they can be your voice. Especially if you don't want to become involved politically in such things as letter writing or phone calls to representatives.
The majority of gun owners don't belong and as the NRA points out, we who do, carry them around on our backs. The apathy among some gun owners is sickening. They'll buy the newest gun or gadget but put no effort into retaining their gun rights. That is, unless you include their sitting around and bitching about it.
I've also heard most of the excuses about how some people dropped their memberships or fail to join because of the agressive fund raising efforts of some of these organizations. I say if you don't want to contribute more than your dues and perhaps one additional contribution throughout the year-----throw them away!
The bottom line is sitting around and bitching about it will never solve the problem! YOU, have to get pro-active about retaining your gun rights. For many people these organization are their voice.
