do you own a overkill rifle?

The only hunting I do on a regular basis is pheasant.

However, I own rifles chambered in .22LR, .30-30, .44 Magnum, and .30-06. I believe these 4 calibers (along with my 12 gauge shotguns) would pretty well cover any hunting I wanted to do in the lower 48, without being "overkill". Some day, I think it would be fun to own a rifle chambered in .375 H&H, just because.

I own a .375 H&H for 'no particular reason' other than I thought it would be fun and a friend had one he needed to get rid of. Should be lovely for moose, bears, 70's vintage Americruisers etc.

What a fun thread!

I help out with the shooting club's annual hunter sight in and I've met a lot of hunters I believed were carrying an "overkill" rifle. But, they knew how to shoot, and frequently let me take a couple of shots. I would go home with a bruised shoulder and look at myself in the mirror and think "today was a good day!"

I own several 7.62 caliber rifles but don't hunt wth anything larger than .22. That is liable to change though.

Have fun and be safe out there hunters.

i once used my .338 win on a 60 lb hog.does that qualify? 20 yards and a head shot. for years i used a .444 on little florida deer,i never considered it overkill even if my buddies did.in 25 years of using it,i never once had to follow a blood trail.they all fell down and died right now!

I love my old Marlin .444, Hit a deer running away once, lets just say it "valleyed" the back. Had it hanging in the shed when my boy got home, looked in there, and came and asked me if I was going to go back out and pick up the rest of the deer!! Dem 240 grain core locks do a dirty little number on dem ole deer!

2 of them in fact. 45/70 & a 300 win mag. shooting deer usually at less than 80 yards. but, unless things go wrong, i have yet to chase a deer, let alone track one. and the one where i did have to chase him, the bullet hit a tree first, the deer only ran 70 yards. all the rest, have fallen exactly where i have shot them. that can be really important for a couple of reasons. one, i am partially color blind, so finding blood in anything but good lighting is tough, secondly, hunting on the edge of a swamp, well, if the deer gets a chance, we all know where he is going to go.

Well, if we talk target, rather than game, and the target is a water-filled sealed paint can, my .44 mag Ruger Blackhawk blows the lid way higher than my .22 Ruger Single Six. So the Blackhawk seems about right. I'm still working on justifying my 458 Win Mag.

I usually shoot gophers with my AR....55g V-max handloads.....is that too much? I have also used my R700 in .243 on gophers.....we were actually deer/antelope hunting, but there were none to be seen. 100g partitions put a hurting on dem gophers......

My brother-in-law just brought me some 30-378 Wby Mag to reload. I am not sure what the hell he would need to shoot with that......maybe gophers at 1000 yds?!

Since the biggest gun I own is a 30-06, it's about not grabbing the wrong round for the job at hand. Most of time 150's get the nod, but sometimes you need more mass :)

Shot a skunk once with my .458 Winchester Magnum. And a turtle, come to think of it. That was interesting.

Shot a feral hog with my LAR .50 BMG once. It walked onto the range and paid a terrible price.

I just ordered my 458 SOCOM upper, with the hopes of finally pulling a moose or bear tag in the lottery. If I don't, I'll have an overkill deer rifle.

:uhoh::uhoh::uhoh:

It isn't that bad of a choice for close range deer. It duplicates a mild .45-70Govt. load, which tends to knock 'em down quick without damaging too much meat...perfect brush gun if you ask me.

:)

Ill throw in my TC Triumph. 100 grains of 777 and a 250 grain Speer Deep Curl. Seems like a generally acceptable overkill gun for whitetails:)

wow, I didnt think there was such a thing as overkill...

I have a .220 swift for overkill on varmints,

and a 300 win mag for overkill on everything else.
