my father in law has a smith and wesson 38 and would like to know the date of manufacture but dosent want to pay 30 to them to find out can anyone help out here?
It would help if you gave some hint as to the model, however S&W used the C-Prefix on the Models 10,11,12,45,and the Aircrewman. Your serial number dates your .38 to 1948.
Assuming that there are six digits in the serial number, late 1951 to early 1952 would be a more accurate guess. I have a 2" pre-model 10 with serial number C56xxx that lettered to Sept 1949. The serial number range of C1-C223998 should actually be 1948 to 1951 or 52.
If you can post a picture or a more complete description we can possibly give you more information. Things such as barrel length, caliber, etc. would help.
