Dobbs' wife arrested for having handgun at Newark airport

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- The wife of CNN "Moneyline" host Lou Dobbs was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport on Wednesday for having a loaded handgun in her handbag, authorities said.

Debi Dobbs, 49, of Sussex, was arrested at the security checkpoint at Terminal C after the gun was discovered, according to Allen Morrison, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport.

She was arrested at 3:15 p.m. without incident, Morrison said. Debi Dobbs was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and released on her own recognizance.

A spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration said they were trying to determine the caliber of the gun.

Morrison said Debi Dobbs did not tell officers why she had the gun.

Debi Dobbs was at the airport to board a flight to Florida, authorities said. Christa Robinson, a CNN spokeswoman, confirmed that Debi Dobbs is the wife of Lou Dobbs, the host of that network's nightly business show "Moneyline."

Robinson said Lou Dobbs was not available for comment. He was not with his wife at the airport.

Last time I was at the airport, just after Halloween, the TSA folks had taken over in Cleveland. They were wearing the golf or polo style shirts [3-button pullover] with the TSA logo embriodered on. No real badge or ID of any kind was visible. Makes it kinda hard to ID the real bozos later, doesn't it? ? ? ? :banghead:

I hope she skates just like I hope I skate if I did a oops like that. I hope any of us may skate should this oops happen to any of us.

Back in 1998, I went to the airport to pick up my then-girlfriend. Took my brief case for the reading and forgot about my diving knife. The x-ray folks coolly asked me to remove the knife. A county sheriff gave me a ticket.

This is what counted as released on my own cognizance. (sp?)

Long story short, the judge recognized the diving knife differed from a dagger. The DA dropped the case. But made me 'donate' $500 to some widow fund.

I was dumb to let the oops happen. Could have got myself a new walther with that donation.

But like I said, I hope any of us skates should that oops happen to any of us.

Yeah, I hope she skates. This huge security apparatus swoops down on this poor lady. Boy, I feel safer already. She's not the problem as I see it. Imus interviewed Lou Dobbs yesterday. According to Dobbs, she was at the airport with their children. Also, he said they had bought the gun 20 years ago so she`d have it when he was out of town. Why she had it with her? Brain fart?:banghead:

She was not arrested for "having a gun at the airport." She was arrested for trying to pass through Security with a firearm. I can walk around our airport all day with a loaded firearm and not get arrested. Just don't try to pass the detectors.

I don't think the screeners could tell because the numbers denoting the caliber were in that mysterious Arabic script. If it had been stamped in Roman numerals, they would have immediately known what caliber (of the gun, not of the gun).
