Took nephew up to friends ranch at Clarksville, Texas yesterday to shoot doe tags. We saw hogs first, back in the woods behind pasture at 250 yards. One of the hogs lined up in binocs behind a grown doe was TWICE as big as the deer. Lots of little ones. No shot. Four does came in the field and were watching the hogs also and being very alert, but closer to the hogs than I thought they would tolerate. The does kept an eye on the hogs, but grazed. I thought the does would come closer or the hogs would come out, neither of which happened.

The does grazed across the field and the hogs faded back into the woods. Nobody even looked at the feeder with corn under it back near our tower. The wind was very light but drifting in our favor.

After everyone was gone we watched another hour then got down out of the tower and walked to see deer and hog sign. I stayed in the cover as my nephew walked the field keeping pace. I jumped a doe and she stepped across the corner of the field and froze for a moment. My nephew went down on one knee and shot her. I saw him drop to shooting position and held up. I never saw the deer from back in the brush. He and I had kept visual and hand sign communication.

He was using his dads dragonov. Second doe with this rifle and standard military soviet copper-washed looking ammo. His dad shot one last week with it. Both heart shots. Both does ran about 30 yards and fell.

This was a VERY old doe with teeth nearly worn down to the gumline. You would think she would have known better.

Nice shot by nephew. Until last year he had never seen a dead deer hunting with his mothers side of the family. Clarksville isn't really hunting- just tower-ambush of plentiful does, but he didn't lose his cool. This was his sixth doe but the first on foot out of the tower and without me spotting over his shoulder.....and not with my scoped Ruger#1 in 7X57 and handloads.

102 lbs live weight, 72 lbs dressed. No milk. Probably 6-8 years old on the jaw chart. She might have thought I was a pig or not seen him until she stepped from cover and stopped to look at him.

I was carrying an Argentine 1909 Mauser Carbine 7.65 with a light 120 Sierra Gameking/Varget handloads in it. Open sights. I'm not going to get to shoot if I keep taking him and that dragonov!

I've never shot the dragonov. Be interesting to shoot it on a bench at 200 and see how it groups with that ammo. I'm sceptical...but there are two dead does.

He handled all the field dressing, skinning and butchering to fit in a cooler. Getting it down. Owner has 30 doe tags and 10 buck tags minus the six we have killed this year.

Got pics...can't load.

I can't get them to load on this forum. Tried all I know to do. I'll be glad to email them direct to you. I don't know if its all original or not, but it's the way they bought it. Nothing obviously added.

As I said, I haven't benched it and shot it, but I would hate to have someone shoot the dang thing AT me. I have a photo of a deer heart with a 7.62 hole in it!

Here's the uploaded pics.

Thanks and info

Razor: Can you tell anything about the rifle? You might be able to tell we are hunting in a wonderful place. Great commercially made blinds with swivel seat and windows, planted field and feeders, lots of cover up to the edge.

Thanks for posting these for me.

You might be able to tell from the light that these are two different does a week apart in about the same area.

FMJ Ammo for Hunting in Texas

There's no prohibition against using FMJ ammo in Texas for big game hunting, you just can't use a rimfire.

See page 54 of TP&W "Texas Outdoor Annual".

In general, I can afford SP rounds for my 8mm Mausers and my 7.62 Mosin, but I'd not be concerned about knocking down an east Texas deer or pig with milsurp ammo- long as I could place the shot right.

Romanian/FMJs

You are absolutely right. I asked my brother and he confirmed that it was some kind of Romainan rifle.

I've got a Vietnam bring-back SKS that shoots way to the right ( I think the barrel is bent) but not much on soviet block weapons.

Shot a pig in the deep brush yesterday while trailing another blood trail. I used what I had, which was a 1909 Argentine Mauser Carbine in 7.65. On reflection I think that walking that area for pigs ought to be done with a Garand. I was working that bolt and flipping good Norma brass out into the grass without a thought. Killed one, shot at one other. We lost the one we were trailing.

Killed two does so far with the Garand and FMJs. Seems to work fine. It's legal.

Now I know this thread is BS. Just ask the Dems on Capital Hill...assault rifles are NOT used for deer hunting. :p

They are in CA. Even the SKS. And whatever the wack-o's start regulating here usually infects the rest of the US eventually. :barf:

Sometimes I wish CA would break off in an earthquake like the old rumor story. Kinda like cutting off a cancer infected leg to save the rest of the body. :uhoh:

Nice pic's and thanks for sharing your stories.

SKS isn't assult weapon in CA. SKS with detachable magazine is. PSL is assult rifle, however if you fill hole in a stock it becomes legal. After last year events assult weapon laws in CA are pretty much destroyed. You can buy slightly modified AK, AR, PSLs, PTR91 etc.....

It is legal, some FFLs even keep them in stock. Yes we still have to play some stupid game, but it isn't nearly as bad as some people think.

The CA definitions of AW has not changed a bit because of the Clinton joke sunset. Unless it is an unmodified C&R, and doesn't have threads on it's muzzle (even under a GL or muzzle break), SKS's are legal. Most variants are not. Must be that "intermediate" sized cartridge the legislature is afraid of so much.

While you can buy an "off list" AR lower for now, once you try to assemble it into a firearm it IS an AW (pistol grip, detachable mag first and foremost hurdles) for which there has been no amnesty or "open enrollment" to register since early 2000. The CADOJ is looking into making a "third" class of AW's just to sucker punch those new AR lower owners here that found the loop hole and bought some.

An AK-22 is the only legal AK variant I've seen for a while. Sure would like to find which and where some 7.62mm models ARE legal on this "left coast". Haven't seen any in my neck of the woods or read about them being available yet. Would be nice though. Of course I'd only have to dream it had a pistol grip or thumbhole stock if I did get one legally here.

Yes it is pretty bad here in CA for gun owners. Just read the sticky in the L&P section on the newest CA restrictions on semiauto handguns for a sickening wake up of how our rights are being further eroded. :cuss: :fire:

Of course the penal code book under my bed is dated 2004 so I could (hopefully) be wrong.... :)

*end rant*

So, don't assemble it with pistol grip.... Use sporter stock or MonsterMan Grip

http://www.coldwarshooters.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=23&products_id=198

or attach mag with $10 device and have all evil feature you want.

As far as SKS the only SKS that is an AW is NORINCO SKS with detachable mag. So any SKS without fixed mag or without evil features are legal.
Even more, since Zastava rifles are not listed you can modify them to accept detachable mag, as long as you willing to play 922r game.

All I am saying is that while situation in CA is much worse than in a free state one can get near autentic AK or AR all day long. AW laws in California no longer says "you can't have AR/AK/FAL" it says "have watever you want, with very minor modifications"

It is a pretty big progress....

and if you want to buy AK today in CA I refer you to this:

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=46541

seems pretty "real" to me.......

Cool.:p I visited with CWS when they first came to CA to sell lowers and helped some buddies on the department get some.

Just don't get complacent with reg'ing them when the laws start changing like they always do. :) Just sucks having to walk a fine line just to have something "cool" here.

Sorry Blackfork for going OT a couple time.
