I am looking at several holster for carrying a Shield AIWB. Some of the holsters have a wedge to tuck the grip of the gun into the body. I see the need for this on a gun the size of a Glock 17 etc but is there a benefit for a Shield.

It depends on your body shape and clothing style. The tighter the butt is tucked in, the slower the draw. Adjust-ability > fixed style.

My Dark Star gear one does not have much tuck up at the belt line, but all my appendix rigs get a foam piece at he bottom to push the holster away from my body and tuck the slide into my abdomen more for concealment. It also aids in safety by pushing the muzzle away from my body upon holstering the gun.

Yes, it does depend on your body shape in addition to the climate you live in and how much you perspire. Not only does that extra material keep the firearm from digging into you, but can prevent possible corrosion to the pistol.

Are you talking about a sweat shield?

I'm pretty sure the OP is talking tuck device for his S&W Shield like the Fricke Butt Tuck Adapter http://dalefrickeholsters.com/product/butt-tuck-adapter-bta-kit/
