Does anyone actually LIKE the 'standard' grip put on ARs, etc.?

Obviously, the size of a shooters hands will have a lot to do with it.

When we changed from A1 to A2 I noticed it and didn't like it. It wasn't life threatening, just uncomfortable. Having shot the HK I knew there were better grips - you can always trust the Germans for that - but the HK grip was also a little big for me.

The M16 was originally set up for Americans of 1950's average stature. It was closer to the world's average, which is why they were well received by some of the first buyers in Asia.

Later the A2 added the fat grip and long stock to better fit the new supersized American soldier.

Another problem is that the safety isn't where it fits best ergonomically - so a backstrap that fills in the grip and gives a better "pistol" type trigger pull leaves it beyond the thumb for some shooters. The shooter has to decide whether "perfect" trigger placement or safety placement is priority. Contrast that with whether 2MOA mispec accuracy needs it, or use of safeties in a mass group of relatively inexperienced users is institutionally more important.

Use what fits. There is no "best" except what works for you.

For those of us who compete in CMP matches, many of the military rifle events include the requirement, "The rifle must be in as-issued condition, with a standard stock..." You learn to get along with the "standard AR grip" and, after a while, you might even grow to like (or at least tolerate) them. :)

I prefer this grip. It is much 'quicker' for me.

'Course, I liked my Treo 650 and BB 8800 before I got my Iphone, too. Just sayin, folks. There's better out there. Once you get rid of the cruddy stuff, you won't know how you lived without the good stuff. :)

I submit that it's not good for ANY hands, large, medium, or small. I have medium, average hands, and that nub is too high to put two fingers above it, and too low to put just one finger above it. Well maybe it is good for very large hands.

I like the Magpul MOE, but the original A2 grip arnt all that bad either.

More money than I care to spend to outfit my "fleet." I'm good to go with what I have.

Cheers!

I actually prefer them, I was taught to put my ring finger on the groove, wrap my middle finger around the middle, and choke up on the grip. It allows for rapid manipulation of the safety.
Sounds weird, but after a while nothing else does it for me.

+1, that's how I was taught (well, re-trained, anyway) to run it also. Once you get used to it, it's a superior grip for running the gun fast at combat marksmanship sort of ranges/drills.

I have 5 AR's of different flavours...4 of them wear either Magpul MIAD or MOE..

The fifth one has a std A2 grip purely because I haven't gotten around to swapping it out yet...:p

I'd like to get a Houge grip for mine. The grip feeels a tad odd to me, though I'm still "new" to AR's. I have Houge grips on my BHP clone and I like the 'tacky' feel of it.

I've got a Magpul MIAD on my MP15 and I love it. The standard grip is not bad the MIAD just feels better to me.

I like my cheap standard grip, but I have never used another. I read this thread, then fired my weapon. It seemed fine to me, but I have medium size hands.
