Does anyone own this pistol or have experience with it? I found a used one for a decent price and put it on layaway.

Taurus PT908 is direct kin of the PT911. Could bring the links on the 911, but getting through them is prodigious undertaking because one can make it a career going through them all. LOL

Here's the scoop on the PT908. By the way, staff member DRAEGER at that forum, is a qualified gunsmith. Notice the guns in his signature. If there's a model of Taurus pistol he's more than likely had one or experience with them.

I had purchased one when it just came out in the mid '90s. It was Taurus's first foray into the non-tilting block design common to the 92/99/100/101 guns with a linkless tilting barrel like the more current pistols ala High Power.

The sample I had, unfortunately, was well below the quality level of the tilting block PTs which I took to be just first production run issues. The dove tailed front sight kept on walking sideways, the metalurgy of the slide was a little soft resulting in a burr developing where the disconnect notch contacts the disconnector retarding slide travel causing failures. The one side of the front side notch was punching down a little to help secure the sight and the burr was filed down to make the gun reliable. One other issue for me was hammer bite. The grip pannels were for me a little too flat for comfort. Eventually sold it off to a co-worker. Later versions may have addressed these shortcomings but never checked up to take notice.

weregunner~I appreciate the links. :D

hksw~:uhoh: Wonder if I should go through with the purchase?

If you can inspect the gun prior to purchase then it should be okay to get it if things check out during the inspection.

Taurus also has the lifetime warranty regardless who has the gun. Granted, you don't want to buy a lemon if it really is so.

On the other hand the preponderance or evidence suggests that the 908 is a decent pistol.

It's one of threads at the other forum as to what others wish Taurus would reissue. Many times is that made apparent. That and in other links that can be brought.

However most of us are going to have to wait for the release of the PT709 that's supposed to come out in December this year.

The choice is your it is true. One bad example does not condemn a whole brand, make, or model.

Well, as noted earlier, mine was one of the first samples out of the gate. Later models may have been revised. When you examine the gun (but aren't allowed to disassemble it), lock the slide back, turn it upsidedown, and look at the disconnect notch in the bottom of the slide. The disconnector contacts the notch at the front of the notch's arc under recoil and note any wear or burrs there. Take ahold of the front sight and give it a little pressure left/right to see if it moves. Certainly the more current tilting barreled PTs nowadays likely overcome the problems I saw.

Thanks to both of you for the advice. I think it's going to be a definite purchase.
