What kind of stock do these have? Is it better than the Remington sythetic stocks on their BDL stainless? How accurate are these M70s?

Thanks,
Steve

Yeah, I managed to pick up a Winchester Classic Stainless in .308 some years back. The stock is kind of rubbery and somewhat flexible but it fits me well so I continue to use it. I had to glass bed the rifle. I had to tune the trigger. I had to polish and dehorn the safety (it's still stiff but I'm not messing with the spring). I put a thinner Decellerator pad on it with rounded edges. The cocking cam notch galled a bit- I burnished it down and heavily lubed it and worked it over and over to smooth it.

My best group was 1 1/2" with Federal Match off a bipod with a Leupold 3.5-10x Tactical on top. Not bad for a featherweight barrel contour and me shooting it... I have since switched to a more practical and correctly sized scope for the rifle- the Leupold 4x-33 Matte perched in Warne QD rings on Warne Peep Bases... I had the front sight on with Black Max epoxy but I might silver solder on a band ramp.

I would consider replacing the stock with a Rimrock if they make one for the Winchester SAs but if I beat the factory one up a bit or fall down a hill I won't be crying in the woods...

Like mine just fine

I have had a Stainless Classic SA in .308 for about 8 years. The stock that comes on the gun is fine.....I would say that it is comparible to the plastic stock on the Rem 700 BDL. I wasn't having any problems, but as a rule, any rifle that I like enough to keep, I usually have it glass bedded and the trigger "cleaned up". The rifle was already shooting fine, but I find that glassed bedding helps with helping the rifle reliably holding zero. Trigger is now 3 lbs and crisp. I have not had any galling problems.

Scope is a Ziess Conquest 3-9x40 sitting in Leupold Dual Dovetail rings and bases. I've had this glass for 3 years now I believe, and believe it is a "best buy" in quality optics.

Last groups I shot with this rifle were all 3 shot @ 100yrds.

Handload- 150 gr Nos Part/Varget- .98"
Factory - 150 gr. WW Failsafe - .69"
MilSurp - Austrailian 147 gr Ball - 1.79"

Here is the gratuitous dead deer pic. My girlfriend killed her first deer with the .308 M70 2 weeks ago:D
