I have a tactical shotgun with the 18.5 barrel and adjustable stock. I have only shot it a few times at paper. I'm itching for a new pistol or rifle and considering selling this to finance the next gun.

I'll have to admit I only bought it because I figured I should have one. I have my glock 19 at my bedside at night. Why should I hold onto a gun I'm never going to use? Even if I wanted to shoot clays, I'd be better served with a longer barrel, right?

Don't worry about what you "should" have, man. If the shotgun doesn't do anything for you, and you don't plan on doing any shotgun hunting, then no sense to have it!
I personally think they're pretty enjoyably, both for aesthetic and pragmatic reasons. Few firearms strike me as versatile as a nice shotgun. Home defense, sporting (clays, nearly any sort of hunting, etc), marksmanship with slugs, and just near any application.

If you don't plan on doing any of that, though, then trade it in for something else.

Whereas my friend is a chronic shotgun lover and buyer, and has one for every purpose that he no longer induges in, I, like you, have only one. I am not a shotgunner, but I have a healthy respect for one. Mine is a riot length Winchester Model 12 12ga (it had a goofy aftermarket choke installed, so cutting it further was no loss to its value). I believe every household should have at least one. Being an avid handgunner and moderate rifleman, I just can't justify too much indulgence in the shotgun sports.

Your opinions echo my thoughts. The plus to shotguns are, they are the cheapest to pick up later and will likely never be banned(tin foil hatish, i know).

Nothing like a shotgun. Effectiveness you can count on. I think everyone needs a good 12" or 20" gauge.

There is little that we, as civilians, can own that is more devastating at close range than the shotgun. Nine 30 caliber pellets at 1200+ FPS, that with good aim and in close quarters, all strike the target at once. I can easily fire controlled pairs with a shotgun, in effect, dumping a full magazine of 9mm ball into a target in about 1.5 seconds.

Shotguns are stoppers. Shotguns are gruesome. Shotguns do terrible things to people at close range.

A friend of mine is a surgeon. He's practiced in multiple violent locations in the Middle East. The conversation went like this in a shotgun class.

Instructor: "You treat many shotgun wounds?"
Dr: "Many, yes." (thick accent)
Instructor: "How many were you able to save?"
Dr: "Only one. All this, we cut away." (motioning to a significant portion of the lower torso) "His life now, not so good."

People think handguns are magic. They think that if you shoot someone, they go down. Ever looked at the actual statistics on the chances of survival if shot with a handgun? They're surprisingly good. Go look at all the videos out there of people getting shot with handguns and failing to go down immediately. Look at all the actions they take after being shot.

Close range? Shotgun? 00 Buck? Yeah... not so much.

Shotguns aren't magic either. They have to be aimed. But in the hands of someone who knows how to use it, the bad guy that hulk-smashes your door at 3AM will not personally be filing a wrongful death suit against you. The executor of his estate or his family will have to do that.

Yeah. Keep your shotgun.

Plenty of people don't have a shotgun.

Plenty of people don't have a handgun.

Plenty of people don't have a rifle/carbine.

So what is there to worry about?

Why should I hold onto a gun I'm never going to use?
You shouldn't, in my humble opnion.

I used to be one of those "never hurts to have X around" kind of guys. Then I found myself with a lot stuff that I don't use, don't get any enjoyment out of, and just kind of have for the sake of having. There were even things that I really enjoyed at one time that were just sitting around. At the same time, there were other items I wanted. Tastes and interests evolve. So I did what you are proposing, I converted unused items to cash to fund current interests.

There's no need to keep around any gun that doesn't do it for you. I don't believe that anyone should own a shotgun just because they are "super versatile". I don't think that everyone needs to own a handgun or a rifle. One certainly doesn't even have to have a .22 in their collection.

It all comes down to what you want to do. I've made the decision that I want less stuff and that I want to enjoy the stuff I have more. For me it means fewer guns, but shooting them much more often. If, at the end of the day, my biggest regret is having sold off a handful of guns, I think I'll be ok.

Get a nice sporting shotgun and shoot some clay birds. Short, defense shotguns are not much fun once you blasted them a few times. On the other hand I have thousands of rounds through my 870 trap gun.

And I am the opposite = where I live, finding a place to shoot rifles means driving over an hour, hauling targets, etc and a lot more to the reloading aspect; whereas, shooting my shotgun at clays is a lot more fun and sociable. Where I might shoot 1000 total rounds in a year through ALL of my handguns, I'll shoot that much in one month through just one of my shotguns

Whatever works for you is what you need to consider

Being an avid shotgunner, I would never be without at least 5, let alone one.

If I wasn't into shotguns, I would still own one for all the reasons siglite stated above.

Getting rid of one gun for another is a foreign concept to me......like owning a wrench that may not be used immediately but will be needed sometime in the future. Maybe that makes me a gun hoarder?

I had one sitting in a closet for 25 years, used it a few times for birds, no use for one anymore. I may at some time get another or not, My Ar also sit's in a closet, my handguns get used and carried. May as well spend the money on what you use the most. I am better after 43 years with a handgun, than I will ever be with anything else, unless it shoots itself, so for the time being I go lees the shotgun.
It also depends on where you live, if your not a hunter, you really have no use for a shotgun other than self defense, personally I prefer a 45 for that purpose.

I don't have one right now, but I am in the market. I have a glock 19 with attached insightX2 light that takes care of defending the home and harth. It also pulls double duty as CCW if I am going somewhere I feel the need for more firepower. I don't do much bird hunting and I shoot handguns much more that I do shotguns. I have limited finances so I have had to prioritize, and a shotgun has not been very hight up the list. I'll get there, eventually though.

As the OP stated, they are cheap. They hold their resale value okay, but you'll probably sell it at a loss. Siglite stated many good reasons to have a good shotgun.

My pistol is at my bed side at night too, but for bump in the night purposes, I grab the pistol, go to the gun cabinet and retrieve my 12 gauge.

My thought is, it's not hurting anything sitting in the safe, closet, where ever. But if you ever need it, there it is. I would feel a lot more secure in a HD situation with a 12 gauge in my hands with my 9mm acting as backup. That's just me. YMMV.

I'm also one of those people that if I sell a gun, the money goes to purchase another gun, and for no other purpose. I'm not going to get much in the way of a new gun by selling a used pump gun.

I'm not going to try to talk you into keeping it, especially if you have already convinced yourself you don't need it and don't want it. I might make you a reasonable offer on it, depending on what it is. ;)

I don't have one yet. And I only in the past year finally bought a .22 rifle.

I came close to buying a shotgun off Gunbroker, but I hesitated and someone else grabbed it.

I've got lots of rifles and handguns though :)

You guys make good points. I did purchase a mossberg 500 that's tricked out for home defense. I wouldn't consider selling it, had i not paid considerably more than a run of the mill 500. If i do get rid of it, I would eventually replace it with a simple shotty.
