Does Feinstein have the power to bring her bill up?

I realize her amendment to S 1805 was agreed to ahead of time for a vote BUT her new bill can she force it to floor?

Doesn't Frist alone have the power to bring bills up for consideration or motions to proceeed?

She can probably get something through the Senate if she puts enough work into it. There is NO WAY it'll get through the House.

It's all posturing, folks. My opinion: the grabbers know it's dead, but are putting on a good show.
 
In the SENATE judiciary committee, the Dems.

In the House, the GOP. And very pro-gun people running the show.

Isn't Orrin Hatch the chair of the judiciary commitee? He has no guts standing up to the Democrats.

Between 60-70% of Americans report supporting the AWB when polled. This has been found in multiple polls, even some done by more conservative news organizations. Many people here fail to believe the numbers are true, but remember we here at THR are in a very small extreme group of gun owners.

I will be surprised if a new AWB isn't passed. In the end, the Republicans will cave into political pressure (they have a history of doing this). They are not going to make a small group of gun owners happy at the expense of a majority of the voting public.

And of course GWB, being a liberal, will be more than happy to sign it.
 
Her bill amendment may not get thru committee so it can get to the floor of the Senate. If there is enough opposition to the bill with her rider attached, it will not get out of committee and the bill will die or at the least he amendment will be dropped if the as-written bill has a real need to be passed for whatever reason.

Unfortunately, Feinstein can roll over to the other Senators and offer her support (her vote) for other bills if key Senators would support her amendment. She would probably sell her soul if she knew she had a chance to either extend the AWB in its current form or even get a chance to ban private ownership of guns altogether.

Hopefully the House will either let this thing die in a House committee or have it defeated by a floor vote.
 
I just found out the bill is not going to comittee and was placed on the calendar to sit there.

when the AWB "polls" began appearing

'way back when'--twelve years ago?--everyone who was 'pro-gun' was flummoxed by them. It appears we still are, despite the fact that

The press now readily identifies that polls done on political candidates and related issues are 'Republican' or 'Democrat'

US News & World Report stumbled on the gun polls back when 'the plastic gun' BS was run out in 1993--IIRC.

In later years, the NRA has pointed the way to balancing these 70% polls by asking a different kind of question. We should study that further, and then have the new type of polls done--and done again, and again, and again, and....

The second way to deal with these polls is to get the buyer of the polls--e.g., VPC, et.al. identified as sectarian/extremist. I think we are getting closer to that day.

But, there is no question that 'the prevailing wisdom' is against AWs....

I respect every thing you do for our cause but isn't it a little dangerous to brush it off so easily. I would speculate that many people follow your lead and the way I read your statement is that we should ignore this?

Not me, if this thing goes away then it will be because we make it do so.

I don't know what you are trying to say here but it seems to me to be a very frivolous statement to make, we should be mobilizing to ensure the outcome not sitting back and hoping.
 
We may be a minority but we are a significant minority in the states that GW has to win in order to retain the White House. Remember if we stick together and vote in numbers they will take notice!

Start the cards and letters going out folks! No retreat! No surrender!
 
The Republicans control the Judiciary Committee with a one-member advantage and the vast majority of them are very solid pro-gun Republicans, though Mike Dewine is also on the list and he voted against us in March. However, Russ Feingold is on the Dem side and he risked Dianne's wrath to vote with us, so we still have the one-member edge.

However, in this case it does not matter - since this bill is substantially identical to Dianne's earlier amendment to S.1815, it does not need to go through committee and has been placed on the calendar.

From the calendar it can come up at any time - they could vote on it today if nobody objected. If even a single Senator objects, that gains us 24 hours; but no more - so this bill can come up VERY quickly.

WRITE YOUR SENATORS NOW and let them know you will support them in stopping this bill through filibuster and just plain old obstructionism. If your Senator is a hard-core anti, write the guys like Larry Craig and Jeff Sessions and let them know that you'll support their re-election if they'll fight for us here.

Write them a nice, polite letter explaining that your own Senator doesn't represent your interests and will not listen to you - give them some ammo to use on the Senate floor debates.

My senator (Warner) is apparently a co-sponsor (what a backstabbing :cuss: ) -- now what do I do? Can't imagine a letter from me asking him to vote against is going to have much effect.

I'm not "sitting back and hoping", and I hope nobody takes it that way.

HOWEVER, look at it from DiFi's POV: she knows it won't pass. (More on why below.) ALL she can do is stir up controversy on the subject, get the activists from both sides all worked up.

Problem is, it'll backfire. The timing is wrong for her - the ban sunsets and THEN the Prez race happens. Once the ban actually dies, a lot of the people around here pondering an LP protest vote and wondering aloud if a Kerry presidency wouldn't be so bad will come around and vote Bush, noses held if necessary.

People, it's like this: voting to renew the ban will not gain Bush any new votes, and will cost him a pile of current ones. Ya follow? Anybody who would be pleased that he didn't veto it STILL wouldn't vote for him, not when Kerry has a 100% approval rating from the VPC and Bush was pro-CCW in Texas.

I'm rather surprised this isn't more obvious to folks...
 
It's a new disorder. ABB. Hate for Bush outweighs any consideration for gun rights. Treatments include voting for LP, voting for Kerry to show "them," and seeing a psychiatrist abot conflicts.

A history question... Didn't Bush Sr. piss off the NRA in '90? Didn't they either stay home or vote Perot?

Of the "majority" of Americans that support the AWB I doubt very few of them have any idea what the bill really restricts. I also doubt many of them feel strongly about the issue. Voting against this bill isn't likely to get many Republicans voted out of office. However the Democrats lost a huge number of seats in the House after this bill was passed 10 years ago.

This law that hasn't reduced crime simply isn't that important to the majority of those who state on such polls that they support it being renewed. As history has shown, it is important to those that oppose it.
 
Wasn't larry craig the guy that gave the (pretty durned good) speech against the awb last time?

If so, I'll write him. Both of my senators are retarded. Already wrote my rep just in case, but he would sooner wipe with sandpaper than vote for that garbage.
