I'm looking at buying a comp-tac kydex holster for my blackened DLC Kahr P9 but am concerned it will wear off my finish. Anyone have experience with kydex and black or blued guns????drf

I have a kydex holster for my Sigs and XD9SC. I lightly coat the inside of the Uncle Mikes holster with FP10 during the begining of last year. I dont see any wearing. YMMV

It's the dirt in the holster and on the gun that wears the finish.Keep both clean and you won't have a problem.

I completely wore the blue off of the contact areas on my PII with a Ky-Tac holster. Probably is the dirt, but I did try to keep things clean. Then again, 45 minutes of dry fire a day will rip the blue off whether your holster is plastic or leather.

I do think, Kydex and Fobus best kept (ideally) for stainless weapons .... would prefer not to impose this on a good blued. Having said that - yeah ... abrasive particles are probably what would wreak most havok.

So - keep clean and a mild wipe over with something marginally lubricant in nature .. more for the gun. Boeshield I think might be useful.

Most of my dry fire drills begin with the draw. I am using Steve Anderson's new dry fire book. Before work this morning I did (at a minimum) 235 draws. I shoot IPSC, IDPA, and Steel Challenge. The draw is critical on IPSC classifiers and speed shoots, and Steel Challenge.

My kydex holster (Maddog) secures the gun (SIG 229) by a friction fit on the front trigger guard. You hear a distinct soft click when drawing or holstering the gun. Yes it causes a small wear mark. But because the rest of the gun is loosely craddled by the Kydex, I don't get wear in traditional places of a tightly boned leather holster.

All holsters will cause wear...This is the nature of the beast...Kydex is a bit better in this regard because you can "fit" the weapon at the trigger guard only...this causes minimal wear...

With a leather holster that isnt "lined" we still have to fit it a 2 places...Trigger guard and ejection port..this can cause a bit of wear on the edges of the frame, but not to any great extent...If made correctly, the weapon with have a slick little click when placed back into the holster...

"ONE SIZE FITS ALL" holsters are notorious for causing wear spots...They arent molded to fit and shift because of it...

BTW...most holster makers dont use "liners" anymore because of the quality of the hides that we can get these days...Most times it is done just for the "look" of a lined holster, or at customer request..

just my .02 cents

Thank you everyone for the information....I'm going to order the Com-Tac in kydex for my P9...drf

I had some problems with my kydex holster wearing the bluing off a 1911. I shoot in a very sandy area. Some research found that the dust waas sticking to my holster's interior. I got in the habit of cleaning my holster with WinDex after each session and the problem disappeared.

My primary 1911 has the finish badly worn and I blame it on my BladeTec holster. But, I don't care.

More information required: where can I get one ? Who is Steve Anderson ?

As was mentioned, it doesnt matter what the material is, it will wear the finish on your gun at the contact points. If you live in a warm climate and sweat like I do, you dont want to wear a leather holster. Leather holsters get wet and stay wet and your gun is toast as its always wet with sweat and chemicals from the leather. It wont dry out over night, or even in a couple of days for that matter. The Commander in the pic was originally a blued gun that was in a leather holster and rusted. I had it hard chromed and I've since gone to Kydex(Blade-Tech is my favorite) and the rust problem for the most part has gone away. The gun is rarely ever wet although the grips still do get wet. The Kydex holsters are a lot more comfortable too. The black marks on the slide and at the dust shield in the pic are where the holster has worn the HC to a polish, its not really black, but worn bright. HC will still rust if you dont take care of it by the way. If you look just under the safety, you can see where its starting to go(again), you still need to pull the grips and address that and keep the HC oiled.
