Google doesn't seem to be cooperating with me tonight. Does anybody know if I can get a handi-rifle in 7.62x39?

At one time they offered complete rifles in 7.62x39 and had that option for the accessory barrel program. As far as I know it is no longer an option for a rifle or for the barrel program.

I had visited Marlin/H&R's site several times over the course of a year back many months ago and saw that they offered 7.62x39 as a caliber in a complete rifle, but did NOT offer the 7.62x39 in the accessory barrel program.

I always thought that was pretty stupid, as the Handi-rifle is not well suited to the heavier calibers as light as the rifles are and lighter cals. like 7.62x39 and .223 are ideal for it, IMO.

A handi rifle in .500S&W would be neat.

I have one - the sights come off under recoil. I'm still thinking about metal (aluminum or steel) sights to replace the silly plastic and fiber optic sights.

At one time 7.62 was offered in the barrel accessory program. I had a frame fitted with one in 2006. IIRC there was a short time in the early to mid 90's that 7.62x39 rifles and barrels were offered for sale also.

Thanks, M'bogo.

I never was quite sure what the story was with the late-ish appearance of the x39 in the handi-rifle line, and then it's disappearance, and the off and on availability of it in the accessory line. You'd think it would've caught on like a house afire, cheap plinking round that it is.

:)

yeah, like I mentioned in the "firearms you wish they made" thread, they really should make them in 7.62x39, and I'd like on in 5.45x39. It seems like it would sell well but maybe it didn't?

Even if they have been part of Marlin for some time, and now part of Remington, H&R/NEF is still a pretty small operation up in Gardner ("r" sounds optional), Mass. and they don't update their web site that often. Since we all agree that they did make the 7.63x39 barrels at some point, why not just call them up? Even if it's no longer a regular item, if they still have a couple around they might fit one for you if you ask nicely.

They had issues with them not setting off steel cased ammo. People decided there was no point in 7.62x39 that wouldn't shoot the cheap stuff so they quit making them.

Gander Mtn in Bryan Tx

had one on the used rack a month ago for $119 in 7.62x39. If I hadnt just a made a monumental gun purchase the previous week, it would have went home with me. Looked brand new--still hurting over passing that one up.

Yes, they did make a 7.62x39 at one time, but because they didn't have a strong enough hammer drop to set off the cheap ammo, they didn't sell well enough.

However. . .

You can find them on Gunbroker every now and then. About two months ago, I was noodleing around Gunbroker and "searched" on "handi 7.62x39" and lo! there was one. I wanted it bad enough to pay the "buy-it-now" price.

Bad news: it wouldn't shoot my reloads with Winchester primers, but it shoots the heck out of the ones that have CCI primers.

Good news: I'm not a good shot, but that sucker makes me look good. Accurate? You betcha! If I didn't already have a .308, that boy would be going into the woods with me. The accuracy, coupled with 30-30 recoil - what's not to like?

Try Gunbroker. One will show up.

Steel cases also cause extraction problems in the Handi Rifle. I encountered this trying to shoot cheap steel-cased .308s in one a few years ago.

One of my local dealers had a Baikal (Russian) single shot rifle imported by Remington in 7.62x39 for about $170 a few weeks ago. I was sorely tempted by it, but couldn't justify it to myself. Still saving for a CZ. :D

By the way, doesn't anyone make a replacement stronger hammer spring or some other solution for the primer issue? Maybe polish the chamber for the ejection issue?

yeah, the issues with the primers/extraction of the steel case seem like they would be pretty easy to fix.

as far as the remington/baikal, it seems neat but lacks the ability to send it in and change calibers.

SaMx, yea but the whole rifle is cheaper than an additional NEF barrel from their barrel program. ;)

SaMx and Owlnmole, I may have spoke too soon as I'm not able to find those Remington Baikal rifles anywhere now. My local guy was moving them for $150-199 depending on caliber. The 7.62x39 was $170 and the only NEF barrel I ever priced was very close to $200 after shipping. I see now that NEF has lowered their barrel prices to more reasonable numbers of around $100/bbl. Times change, I guess.
