Does the US Army ever sell surplus arms?

This may be a stupid question, but what does the army do with it's old guns? I know that they give some to law enforcement, but do they ever sell the surplus? destroy them?

I ask this after buying a Makarov and a Tokarev.

Please dont make me feel stupid if this is a stupid question.

kags, there are questions asked to relieve ignorance, but, no stupid ones in this forum. believe me, you know something others do not. let us share. i am personally ignorant of many many things. learn something every time i check in here.

military firearms are u.s. govt property. the army cant sell them.
they turn them in and some other agency disposes of them. like the garands. many are chopped up and sold for scrap metal. some make their way to the civilian marksmanship program. they sell them, with some restrictions, and good prices , to you and i for use in marksmanship training programs.

if you dont have a garand, get you one. that is one fine and sturdy rifle. qualifying for one is very easy. somewhere on TFL, i suspect someone has posted all the details. do an archive search.

at one time they sold m1 carbines and 1911's too. think that is history now. glad i got one of each while getting was good.
 
And another crying shame is that political correctness is rapidly ending the police trade-in market for used firearms. Was a time you could find real bargains on guns that were like new with the exception of holster wear. :(

Huh? that's the first I've heard of that. OK, I can see no LE only Bushmasters, M16s and 14" shotties, but aside from LE only mags, there aren't any pistols that a civilian can't have(except for that 22 cal FN job). Is there something I'm missing?
 
did all this purchasing from CMP back in the 60's. was in the military, but, was the same for us and civilians. paid less than a hundred bucks for each. this was at that time.

i did hear a while back the garands were going for 4/500 or so. still a good buy in todays market. do this soon as CMP has been nearly closed out many times in the last decades for providing "evil" guns to the citizens. hell, we the people own them. apoligize, i do tend to get crabby over some things.

get what they got whle getting is good.

M1 Carbines were $20.00. $18.50 for the carbine, $2.50 UPS.
1911's were $25.00.

I got my M1 Rifle from the old DCM in the 80's for $165.00.

Used to be, departments would sell their old guns when changing to a new one and they would also sell guns from crimes (following the trials) and lost-n-found guns that no one claimed. More and more agencies now destroy these guns instead of "putting them back on the street." Some of the agencies that are strapped for money will still sell them, but HCI/VPC and politicians put a great deal of pressure on them not to do that.
 
Nowadays they simply give the old military weapons to the newly formed Federal law enforcement agencies. When they have more machineguns than they can give away, they just create some new enforcement agencies. </cynicism>
