I just found out thru my KISA(Kodiak Island Sporting Association )newsletter that the local 4 H owns 4 AR-15's for training. That is preaty cool I think .

I live in northern IN and our 4H shooting sports club owns quite a few guns. Not sure of the exact numbers but around five 870 12ga. for trap, several Ruger Mark IIs for pistol training and a whole truckload of .22 rifles ranging from Old Remington 514 to newer Savages. Our 4H gun club has grown from 5 kids to over 60 in about 10 years. The guys who sponsor it do a super job and are really commited to proper training of our kids. I just hope other clubs around the country are doing the same. This is where we keep our rights growing, at the grass roots level!

Red Label,

I'm interested in what county you reside. I'm in Carroll.

I'm with our 4-H Shooting Sports Program. We have a handfull (or cabnet full), of New England/H&R single shot shotguns, one nice, new this year, Mossberg 500 Bantam 20ga, five or six .50 cal muzzle loaders, but haven't yet got the rimfire part up and running. All our rifle and pistol work is done with air :( .

We have on the book 127 kids and 13 instructors.

Yes, CMP .22 Mossbergs and Remingtons. No ARs, although the sponsoring club does own ARs, M1s and M1As.

ARGarrison, how do, neighbor up State Road 25. Did it thunderstorm where you are today? Get out to the cowboy match at Wildcat? How's the mushroom hunting this spring?:D

ARGarrison, We live in Elkhart Co. We, I believe only have 4 or 5 instuctors who all seem to work very hard. I'm not sure but there may be more than the 60 kids I stated that are members of the club. There all always more every year. I do know that we got a lot of the money for the new guns from Friends of the NRA. You might want to check them out if finances are keeping you from getting your rimfire program going.:)

El Tejon,

Hello, and yes lighting and rain off and on today, with a good storm brewing as I write. Been under a Tornado watch all most all day. I've only made it out to Wildcat once and that was for a Freinds of the NRA fun shoot. Mushrooms have been bad to dry at the start, but haven't been looking all that hard or much either.

Red Label,

For once money is not the problem with the rimfire program. It boils down to a lack of understanding with our county youth agent, when she took the job we had a working program, but the then corodenator didn't have money or a range for the adding .22s. We since have changed the range location and are slowly building funds, but our youth agent doesn't see the need for adding anything. We lost a good instructor because of this.

I firmly belive we have the best First Year Shooting Sports program, others may share that title. What we are lacking is progressive steps forwards year after year.

I also know of Counties in state that their 4-H shooting sports consist of just archery. As well of one that last I knew had only two instructors, one Rifle and one Archery. Consider Elkhart lucky to have what it does.

Those of us in the club know we are lucky to have what we do. This is only my, or rather my kids, third year in the program so I am just learning the ins and outs of what goes on. I was elected to serve as an advisory board member this year which really only amounts to a glorified gopher position. But I am a very happy and qualified gopher and am proud to help out!:) We also just this year are building a dedicated trap range at our facility. Up until now the reigning rifle/pistol club has not allowed shotgun sports on their grounds. They felt that they were above all that. You know, the good old boy mentality. But membership at the club has been dropping rapidly and they are coming to realize that unless they get new members from the younger generation their club will soon be history. Finally someone talked some sense into their heads and those guys just happened to be several of our 4H sponsors!:D

I know I'm bringing this up from the past, but....

I'd like to tell all The High Roaders that read this thread in the past that, Carroll County (Indiana) 4-H Shooting Sports now has 4 new Marlin 980S .22 LR rifles for this the 2005 year. :D :D :D

Belive it or not. It was purchased with county money. The county funds the 4-H program. There has been money ear marked for our program for sometime, mostly it is used to pay for our instructor training. We just hit at the right time and the extension office had a sum that needed to be used at the end of the 2004.

We not only got the 4 Marlins, but 4 Cadwell ajustable shooting rest, and 2 tables all at the same time with county money. We were ready to pay with club funds, but didn't pass up the chance to have it purchased for us.
