Hi everyone. I have a Romanian AK-74 clone and a question about an indention in the hammer of the weapon. Is it normal for an AK series rifle to have an indentation in the face of the hammer, where the rear of the bolt/bolt carrier strikes it to recock the hammer?

I am suspecting that the answer is 'no' and that this is because the hammer is a compliance part, with bad heat treatment/material causing a soft hammer.

Anyways, thank you for the help.

Do you have a SAR or a WASR? If you have a SAR, you have a cheap american made hammer to help comply with the number of U.S. made parts that it needs. They are known to be soft and sometimes end up with that dent. If you have a WASR then, you should have a Tapco G-2 trigger group and, that shouldn't be happening.

Check the right front of your receiver just under the charging handle. It should say what it is there. Also look on both sides of the receiver. There should be dimples on the each side where the mag well is. If there are dimples there then, it is a "Sar" series AK. If it is a "Sar" series AK, I'd ditch the FCG and get a Tapco FCG along with a sheppards crook to hold all of the pins in. That was the best thing I ever did with my Sar-1 when I still had it.
