I'm out hunting pheasants today, I'm wearing jeans and my bird vest. No dog, so I'm plodding along, being noisy trying to scare the birds up. I look up and see a doe, 45 yards away. I step forward 5 yards, no response. I light up a cigarette, the wind was crossways, no response to the lighting match or my movement. I step another 10 paces closer, no response. She looked at me a few times, but nothing. Another 5 paces closer, we're now 15 to 20 yards from each other when she looks right at me. I look at her and say "Oh come on now, I could have had you any time", she goes back to eating. I crush out the cigarette and she moved off with the flag up.

20 minutes later, I'm sitting on a rock and a flock of turkeys come by. I laugh because it is so comical. They come about 10 yards from me, never spooking at my laughter or me talking to them.

What gives? Why doesn't this happen during deer or turkey season? What did I do right to get so close? No camo, no scent control (although the wind wasn't blowing toward the doe), no quiet movement, laughing, talking, moving. Have I stumbled onto the dumbest animals on the planet, or onto a secret method of hunting - not acting like a hunter?

"Bambi's Law" Those who know it....don't need any explanation. Just the way it is. :)

They know when the season starts and what you are hunting. Pretty smart? While people were sighting in at the gun club range, 10 shooters had to hold their fire while 3 does wandered slowly the length of the 100 yard berm. 20 minutes later we had to hold fire again while a flock of turkeys walked across. I think they did it just to tantalize everyone. Fingers were off the triggers and guns unloaded but every scope tracked them all across and dreamed about opening day in a little over a week.

My trip to Eastern MT this year was the first I ever made without an either-sex antelope permit (no draw). The first day I had some time to kill before meeting my dad. Stopped off on some BLM land and passed through the gate. After getting out of the truck, opening the gate, driving through, getting out again and closing the gate, about a 14" buck standing 100 yards from me just watched me the whole time. As I drove by him at 75 yards and stopped, got out and stood there in amazement, he never even moved. Then, I put a stalk on 3 that I couldn't tell were does or bucks. Stalked down a washout about 1000 yards to pop up and find, you guessed it, 3 nice bucks standing and looking at me about 40 yards away. Had at least 5 more easy chances at bucks over the next 2 days.
