So I take the day off yesterday to turkey hunt. Saw quite a few birds, maybe twenty different toms total. In one group there were eleven jakes. Had five at 20 yards or less but passed them up.
Had a real hard time getting close to the long beards. Finally had one start to come in and hang up, then start angling off. This is why I bought my SP-10 and use #5 Hevi-Shot in a custom hand made choke (Tru-Lock).
One shot, one kill. I mean DRT. No flop, no twitch, no nothing. Cartwheeled and head down in the dirt at the shot. 69 paces. I've patterned at 50 yards and it pretty much blew out the center of the target, so I had confidence in the shot. 23# with a 10 1/2" beard.
Private land is a whole different world than the public land I used to hunt. Birds aren't spooked as easily. Way more to choose from.
Watched three gobblers and eight hens fly down from the trees. Spent two hours watching the gobblers and hens work across the field almost in range, then have a walker on the road scare them off.
Mossy Oak camo works. Had a hen less than 10 yards and looking right at me trying to figure out what I was. She never spooked.
