Even the rank amateurs do their research and have a "Plan B": note his Navy Seals videos and gun permit application, selection of a 4WD vehicle specifically to run people over, and the 5" folding knife and pepper spray he purchased to use if cornered by an angry mob. This guy was SERIOUS about inflicting lots of damage to innocent people.

And people ask me why I carry.... :(

Defendant Offers Details of Jeep Attack at University
By BRENDA GOODMAN

The man charged with nine counts of attempted murder for driving a Jeep through a crowd at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill last Friday told the police that he deliberately rented a four-wheel-drive vehicle so he could "run over things and keep going," according to court papers released yesterday by investigators.

Details in the search warrant for the Carrboro, N.C., apartment of the defendant, Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, suggest that he had planned his actions for months and was disappointed the attack had not done more damage. None of the nine people who were struck by the Jeep Grand Cherokee as they were standing in a campus commons area known as the Pit were seriously injured.

According to statements taken by the police, Mr. Taheri-azar, 22, an Iranian-born graduate of the university, felt that the United States government had been "killing his people across the sea" and that his actions reflected "an eye for an eye."

He also told investigators he had been thinking about taking some kind of retaliatory action for two years and had been planning last Friday's attack for two months, the warrant said. He said he was disappointed that more people were not in the commons around noon, when the area is typically crowded, and he told a detective, Matthew Dodson, that he rented the four-wheel-drive vehicle so he could inflict as much damage as possible.

Items confiscated in the search of Mr. Taheri-azar's apartment included computer equipment, an application for a gun permit and two Navy Seals training videotapes. Officers also found two cans of pepper spray and a five-inch folding knife that Mr. Taheri-azar said he had planned to use if he was cornered or threatened in the attack.

Shortly after driving through the lunchtime crowd, he drove to a side street and called 911 to turn himself in. Investigators have described him as being polite and cooperative as he was taken into custody.

Students and teachers continued to try to make sense of last week's violence, struggling with whether to label it terrorism or the actions of one disturbed individual. University officials said they thought Mr. Taheri-azar had acted alone. The F.B.I. has opened an investigation of him, but a spokesman declined to describe the nature of that inquiry.

On Monday, Mr. Taheri-azar smiled as he walked into the Orange County Courthouse, where he was charged with nine counts of attempted first-degree murder and nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Mr. Taheri-azar, who is being held on a $5.5 million bond, told the judge he was "thankful for the opportunity to spread the will of Allah," The Associated Press reported.

He wants...

eye for an eye.... run him over with a jeep nine times or run him over with nine jeeps and be done with it.

migoi

Two months of prep-time and he didn't even manage to put anyone in the hospital?

*snork*

If dipsticks like this guy were a good representation of our enemy's capabilities, I think we could all rest a little easier.

Maybe he's just a pervert who's hoping to get locked in a cell with Lindy England or something.

Im sorry nobody was carrying.

He should be charged with terrorism and hate crimes.

Imagine if a white christian had done this in Iran to Muslim students. Hed be hanging off a bridge limbless and the whole Muslim world would be in an uproar.

Sometimes I think theres two kinds of beings on this world. Human beings and animals. Human beings know how to use common sense, animals go ape ???? and kill innocent people.

Man....I hate humanity.....:barf: :barf: :barf:

There are some serious wack-job I see walking around my campus everyday, but you can't carry inside a school/government building. Meaning the closest place I have access to a weapon would be my car. The bright side is that hippies don't believe in guns so I don't worry, too much.;)

No chance of anybody carrying in Chapel Hill, it's waaaay too socialist. When I used to live in Raleigh NC (30 miles away) Chapel Hill tried to ban handguns within city limits. Plus its a university campus, so it's a no-carry zone.

Fortunately the attacker was inept.

What are your best options when someone is trying to run you down in a Jeep? Do you try to shoot at the passing vehicle? Disable the car or the driver? Risk it losing control or allow it to remain in control of a terrorist?

Seems like a bad situation.

I guess I'll do John Elway in a La-Z-Boy.

Let's say you weren't one of the first people threatened and had time to react. If the vehicle is headed directly toward you, then your course of action is clear. If not, the chance of getting a clear backstop in this case are virtually nil. So then the Jeep comes to a stop. The driver is either going to put it in reverse or exit the vehicle. If he's going to continue driving, I'm going to either look for the clear backstop or close on him and triple-tap him at close range. If he's exiting the vehicle then I'm going to pursue him on foot (ignoring for now I'm not a LEO), and subdue him by whatever means necessary.

I think in Utah you can carry on campus

I plan on carrying anyway when I go to school later this year, even though it is illegal.

If I was unarmed and saw this happening I would try to find a big rock to ...uh...distract him with.

I think it should be prosecuted as a hate crime

two Navy Seals training videotapes
???

Are they talking about workout tapes? (e.g., Chris Caracci)

If so, "Navy Seals training videotapes" may be a bit overstated...I didn't think the SEALS released their training videos to the public...

Like tribbles huh? They just keep reproducing. Shows why a political solution to terrorisim is nearly as important as a military one.

My views are unpopular.

My views are considered a bit extreme, so I'll limit the comment to stating he should be executed very quickly and very publicly.

As far as dealing with the situation as it's unfolding, doing anything meaningful to stop the jeep or driver would be difficult because of the crowd. With 99.9% of folks going away from trouble, the one who wants to end it is literally swimming upstream to the fight. Then you've got no weapon that allows distance between you and an attacker because schools are "safe" zones and evil guns aren't allowed. I'm sitting here thinking and nothing remotely workable is coming to mind. Bad situation.

How smart?

He rented the car but left the knife and pepper spray at home? And the car he rented had more ground/obstacle clearance than the rest. What driving school did he attend?

variant to alertness

Practicality limits what might be done; however, here in PA, we had several incidences through the years of "debris" being thrown off of bridges into the path of an oncoming vehicle. In the cases where either the driver or the passinger was struck, the resulting injuries were life threatening. The windshields were hit, sometimes the side window too.

I believe, one of the "missles" was an ordinary field pumpkin. Now, these vehicles were traveling at highway speeds.
I would think that any object with some mass; a mailbox and post, school bag full of books, brick, etc. could be hurled at the passing SUV; and do enough trauma to the driver to shut him down even if he had not gained high speed.

Then, perhaps, in the similar jurisprudence as is the "sex offender laws" that require neighborhood notification of an offender living next door, the students with Middle East affiliation should be made known to the students and nearby private residents on a campus or at off campus housing, so that all would just be aware of who they are. Not by badges on clothing, or such of course, but perhaps a friendly registered letter from the school registrar with a statement declaring their foreign status to those concerned.

They are "guests" in our nation after all! And we certainly didn't hesitate to identify, restrict, and impound our own citizens of Japanese origin when a state of war existed in 1941, and the threat of sabbotage and a "fifth column" was possible. We are at "war" aren't we?

I do not think that simple public recognition of those who are not our citizens, and should not be guarranteed the same rights as a citizen has, is tyrannical.
The unfortunate US citizen caught up in some law violation in other countries cannot avail themselves of our own Constitutional protection, then why should we gratuitously give those blood bought rights to those who may be here with the sole purpose of destroying us?

"with Liberty and Justice for all," but not anonymity to do harm. Rights guarranteeing justice, but not rights to enable them to go about their business in the shadows; to remain unknown, and surreptitous.
Perhaps a very conspicuous "Alien" campus registration bumper sticker.

Federal HSTs are known for holding together after punching through a windshield.

Enough said. It IS assault with a deadly weapon, after all.

im not a big fan of seperating and labeling any one group, especially one so broad as middle eastern. though my first comment was toungue in cheek, and probably of low taste, i don't see any reasonable solution to these kinds of events. :( even if someone had been carrying, if someone was driving a car at me, i dont know if i could make the shot through the windshield and score an upper com/headshot. especially in a quad like setting.

I wish someone could expalin to me WHY this is not been labled a terrorist crime??? Are the people at UNC burying their heads in the sand???
