Went to the range today with my Freedom Arms model 97 in 357.
I had shot the third cylinder full of 125 grn JHP with 7.5 grn of Unique. Loaded the cylinders like normal. Half cock, loading gate, load the cylinder, close gate, full cock, trigger release, hammer forward. BOOM

I was on the range alone and froze. Round went down range but to the floor, just missed losing a finger.

Powder burns on my middle finger and palm.
I must have been "prayed up" today.
Do not get complacent

Glad you just got a little burned and didn't lose a finger friend.

Did your thumb slip off the hammer when you were letting it down or what?

Yeah and that's something we single action fans have to do often.
Good thing you were following the basic gun safety rules and was pointed down range.

When I was young and stupid I had a ND with a .22 pistol while it was in my pocket. I called myself reaching in and checking the safety and BANG. I must have pulled the trigger without realizing it. I still don't know exactly how I did it. Luckily the bullet didn't break the skin. I had a thin red line down my thigh where the bullet went right along it and out my jeans leg and into the floor an inch or two from my foot.

I shake my head and wonder how in the world it wasn't way worse than that.

But it's a lesson I never forgot, and while your instance wasn't a brain fart like mine was, you'll not forget it any time soon, I promise you that.

Glad your injuries were minor, and think it's good of you to post the reminder for others.

I'm still noodling through what was described.... Was this
hand near the muzzle or the cylinder gap ?

I'm not familiar with that particular firearm...but on my new model Blackhawk...as long as I have my finger off the trigger the gun won't fire when the hammer drops. I press the trigger only long enough to release the hammer...then I immediately get off the trigger. No worries after that point.

Do you routinely hold the trigger back as you lower the hammer?

Lost my focus and got complacent. Learned a lesson without much cost this time.
