It does look like it will sunset on schedule.. It's even probable that it will sunset on schedule. But it's not definite.

Last thing I want to complain about next week is Difi et al slipping it through & our guys cutting a deal because we started partying before the thing was laid to rest.

Keep the phones ringing. There cannot be too many nails in this coffin. In fact I won't feel easy til the AWB is beheaded, has a stake through it's heart, is burned (with kerosene as gasoline works too quickly), nailed shut in it's coffin & burried at least 12 feet under the ground.

Call your Senators & deliver the message:

If you vote for a renewal of the "assault weapons" ban I will not vote for you. If the "assault weapons" ban is renewed I will not vote for anyone in your party.

1 (800) 648-3516

Then call Bush & tell him that your vote depends on letting the "assault weapons" ban sunset on schedule.

White House:
Phone: (202) 456-1414
Fax: (202) 456-2461

& for updates on what's happening in the senate go to http://awbdeathwatch.blogspot.com/

It's looking good I'll admit, but I don't trust congress or the NRA enough to relax just yet.

Besides, if we make a strong showing in the senators minds (via calling them) That will make them more reluctant to consider another AWB next year. & trust me, if this one sunsets on schedule they will try to pass a new, possibly worse, AWB.

Have a few dirnks after the senate calls it quits today & do the same tomorrow & everyday until Tuesday. Then break out the kegger. Not before.

Oleg,

Thanks. I just dial my senators direct so I wouldn't have noticed it.

any idea why it isn't working? That should be the same one used last March & until you mentioned it nobody has said a word about it not working. I'm wondering if they changed the number for some reason or if it's just a temporary problem (hopefully do to politicially aware gun owners flooding the lines)

month from now senate will not be in session atleast they shouldnt be because target end date for session is october 1st and I am sure some senators want to get back to the state they represent so they can campaign some

I just keep shaking my head over the bizarre statements supporters of the ban make on my TV. I just saw a snip on the Tulsa local news. They asked the Tulsa Chief of Police about the AWB. He wanted it renewed. And then he said, "you know, these assault rifles really aren't useful for anything but killing police officers." Straight face. No qualifying statements.

Talk about wanting to bang your head on a wall!! I guess all of my military style rifles are defective.

When a public official says something like that, I think there are only two alternatives to explain it.

1) They really are idiots and believe what they are saying. In which case they shouldn't be making decisions and spending my money.

Or

2) They know what they are saying is wrong but they are intentionally attempting to deceive the public. In which case they have no business being public officials!

One of Delay's staff members called a member of www.awbansunset.com and told them that nothing AW related was comming up for vote this week.

The House is not in session on Friday, the ban ends at midnight on the 12th, not the 13th like we have thought. thus... We already won! :D

The ban never expires, it is repealed.

The articles you linked to are wrong in many ways. They where written by ignorant reporters. This information on the 12th being the last day, not the 13th is only a few days old.

It was discussed on the AWB forum.

I am the man who spoke with Delay's assistant

On Wednesday, I did speak with Jon, the floor assistant to Rep. Delay. He did say that it would NOT come up for a vote at all. Period. Mr. Delay was seen on the news that night making the same statement. The law states that it will be repealed ten years after the date of enactment. The law was enacted on Sept. 13th. The law is repealed on the 13th. Monday is the 13th. Monday begins at 12:01 am. That is when the law is repealed. Any questions.

Call now, call in a month, call in two months.

http://www.senate.gov/
http://www.house.gov/

Commend your senators speaking out in support of letting the AWB sunset (like my Senator Coleman) and state your disagreement with those who want a new AWB (like my Senator Dayton).

They are going to get bombarded by antis over this. In local news, in cable news, in the broadcast news and in 80% of newspapers. Talking about AK-47s and showing full-auto weapons firing is FUN for newsies - even if their facts are entirely wrong. The AWB also has the general support of many mis-informed fence-sitters.

The Dems will eventually and continually re-introduce something even worse.

Continual calls in support of RKBA will keep this down AND help support the few Repubs out there working against other infringements.

It ends at Midnight, the 12th" , No, it ends at 12:01 on the 13th", " You're wrong, it is not legally in the clear until the 14th"," No...you're both wrong it ends...."

Let's see if we can have 3 pages of posts on this topic AGAIN.

Just trying to clear the air

Education is important. Sometimes it takes a little time to hash things out. Anyway, you read the thread, quit griping about it.

The Senate has adjourned until Monday afternoon. The AWB is DEAD.

True, but Monday should not be considered some type of safe point beyond which we have nothing to worry about.

They could just as easily renew the AWB next week, next month, next year or whenever, as they could renew it before it sunsets.

They could just as easily renew the AWB next week, next month, next year or whenever, as they could renew it before it sunsets.

The AWB will sunset this Monday. A new AWB could be enacted at a later date but this one ain't being renewed. Consider that:

1. The House would have to pass a bill to renew it by Monday.
2. The Senate would have to pass a bill to renew it by Monday.
3. If there were differences in the bills passed in the House and Senate, they would need to be hammered out in a Senate/House conference.
4. Both houses would need to pass the conference version.
5. Bush would have to sign it.

The AWB will die Monday. Whether it gets revived at a later time is ultimately up to us.

The AWB was mentioned on the BBC today (first time I've heard it mentioned here since it was originally passed).

Not entierly accurate, but they seem pretty sure it will expire.

US assault weapons ban to lapse

A ban on military-style assault weapons in the United States is to lapse on Monday, 10 years after it was passed.

The move means that ordinary citizens will be allowed to keep heavy assault weapons in their homes.

The ban needed to be renewed by next week, but President George W Bush's supporters in Congress refused to make time available for a vote to extend it.

The president has said he approves of the ban, but many of his core supporters are opposed to it.

These include the influential National Rifle Association (NRA), a lobby group with close ties to his Republican Party.

Several police chiefs have expressed concern about the move.

The Democratic Party's presidential candidate, Senator John Kerry, says he will make it an issue in the November elections and hold the president accountable for betraying police officers.

The BBC's Justin Webb in Washington says Mr Kerry, who is falling behind in the polls, has seized on the issue as a possible vote-winner.

The ban on 19 different types of military assault weapon was approved in 1994 during Bill Clinton's presidency, after a series of high-profile shootings.

It covers weapons such as AK-47, Kalashnikov and Uzi rifles, as well as high-capacity ammunition magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

In order to get the measure through Congress, Mr Clinton agreed to demands for a vote to be held 10 years later to confirm the ban.

However, Republicans, who now control both houses of Congress, have refused to schedule such a vote.

I just ordered an AR15 Beta C Mag, I'll be sure to get good digital photos and email them to Feinstein :D

alright, how abouts a lesson in how to tell time?

the AWB dies at 12:00 am, monday night.

12:01 tuesday morning, WA can run through the streets showing all the crackwhores and drugdealers his shiny 'new' toy. course, he can do so earlier if he chooses.

many people seem to think the ban dies sunday at midnight. that is not the case. it is monday at midnight. think of it as if monday is 'new years eve'. all the way up until midnight, it is still the old year (AWB-era). after midnight it is the NEW year (post-AWB).

if i had to explain it any simpler i'd have to use sock puppets.
