Took my son up to Cove Campgrounds here in northern Virginia, which has a nice "No frills" rifle range. We wanted to shoot some Pumpkins and such and had a great time shooting the .308 Model Seven Remington. After putting some holes in an old Brake rotor at over 100 yards I realized two things. First the .308 is one powerful round, second, I need to buy another rifle since sharing the Model seven meant we had to take turns... (pretty thin excuse I'll admit). So, with a modest budget for additional rifles (300-500 bucks) I started looking at Surplus stuff and here's a few Mosin-Nagant, some older Mausers, Enfield... actually anything used, that has the punch of the .308 so 30-06 would work. Now here's the question. Anybody have a link for used stuff that might fill the bill?

Thanks.. this board is abaolutely the best source of info .

http://www.aimsurplus.com for example has shooter grade Enfield 2A's in .308 for $99, then add a couple of the 200 round battle packs of Lithuanian ammo for $100 ea. and you're in business.

Also check other C&R places like Southern Ohio Gun and Century International.

K31. AWESOME accuracy for a milsurp, as good as or better than a new rifle in that price range, and you can get a very nice one from AIM for $200. I bought two just last week and while I haven't shot them yet, they are in great shape.

Think twice about the K31

Don't get me wrong. Great rifles but ammo is getting expensive and hard to find.

A Moisin is a kick to shoot ;) and ammo is plentiful and relatively inexpensive.

You can get wolf gold or prvi (same thing) for about the same price as commercial .308

The GP11 is getting pricy, but at the moment it's still a tad cheaper than the commercial stuff if you aren't planning on reloading. Still around 50 cents a round though, which is quite a bit more than x54R at the moment.

OR.. just get two... of each... I did

I would like to stick to .308 ammo so in the surplus arena I think that means 7.62x51 and for used Civil, I think Marlin only does levers leaving Remington maybe Springfield, but I need some help here as I'm a novice in this area. What other manufacturers should I be looking for?

The Lee Enfield 2A is chambered for 7.62 X 51 NATO. It has a slick action and a large(for a bolt action) capacity detachable magazine.
As browninguy said aimsurplus has them for $99.00. Can't beat that with a stick

I think the K31 is the best deal going in a milsurp... Power is right on par with the .308, in fact they use the same projectile. 7.5swiss is the cartridge name (don't ask me why). On the surface the enfield may seem like a better choice. However I don't think they are as accurate, or as strong as the k31.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you can't use the .308 ammo from walmart in the enfield without risking life and limb. So being limited to surplus 7.62 nato, you may actually have a harder time finding ammo for the enfield that the k31.

Many will also predict the value of the k31 to appreciate much faster...

I bought my two k31's earlier this year for $120. I believe I could easily get $180 for them today. They aren't going anywhere though, I like them too much.

Sort of, 7.62x51 Nato and .308 are similar, but there are some differences. Many people say you should not shoot commercial .308 in 7.62 Nato rifles, mainly due to the pressure differences between the two loadings. If you are dead set on shooting .308, there are plenty of brand new civilian rifles for sale between $300 to $500.

Definitely check out the Swiss K31 and the Mosin Nagant rifles.

The K31 will give you one of the most accurate and finely-made rifles you will ever find at anywhere near this price. I have heard that it would cost thousands to make one of these straight-pull actions today. Ammo may cost you until you get into reloading - and even then brass may be a challenge.

The Mosin Nagants will give you a cheap rifle and cheap ammo. Not going to win many shooting competitions, you need to clean immediately to get rid of the corrosive ammo, but could definitely help defend your city from Nazi or Socialist hordes, or your shooting range from watermelons and black circles on paper.

Both are great inexpensive rifles right now. And the 7.62x54R ammo is still a smokin' deal (heck - you should clean your rifle right away any - right?). These low prices will not last and we will all kick ourselves for not buying more.

Your other fine options are a Mossberg 100-ATR or Stevens Model 200 in .308. Both are around $300 which leaves you $200 for scope and rings.

Buying another rifle is always a good instinct. Shoot safely.

Here you are..from Mossberg's website on the scoped combo ATR-100 in .308 Win:

Model 26231 .308 WIN. FREE-FLOATING BARREL, TOP-LOAD MAGAZINE 22" Barrel 1 TURN IN 10" MATTE BLUE SYNTHETIC (BLACK) 7 3/4 LBS $414.00 So, that fits your $300-$500 budget.

You can probably get it out the door for significantly less than MSRP of $414.

Has a 3-9x40 scope already installed, but I don't know what brand/model of scope.

I have an ATR-100 in .30-06 Will hold inside 2"@100Yds with most cheap commercial Soft-Point ammo (Rem Core-Lokt, PMP Pro-Amm), has done less than 0.7" 5 shot@100Yds with Fed Gold Medal Match ammo...although NOT in my hands.

A lot of folks have the Stevens 200 series, essentially the Savage model without the "Accu-Trigger", for a bit less money than the Savage 10/11 series
