Just wanted to share that lately I've gotten AR magazines and Ruger 10/22 BX 25 magazines without difficulty by just having them put on backorder and being patient. I also know that Ruger in particular is working to fill orders and have friends who have gotten 10/22 and Mini 14 20 round magazines this way at normal prices.
It seems that some availability is now returning, but still. Don't give into price gouging. Just be patient and you can still get what you need.

Yep, about three weeks ago, I received five 525-rd value packs of .22lr ammo from Bass Pro that I'd ordered in January. Sadly, though, they stopped accepted backorders. Also received Yankee Hill Machine stripped upper that I backordered in December from Brownell's.

And yes, Ruger is shipping. I just this past week received three Mark III 22/45 mags that I'd backordered a couple months ago.

Unfortunately, many vendors won't take backorders anymore. :scrutiny:

+2 on Ruger, at least. I ordered GSR mags back around the first of the year when the new 10 round poly mags were out of stock, but on backorder. I got them 4 weeks later, which is sooner that I expected.

This is good advice, if the vendors will take backorders. Another is to just monitor the online vendors regularly, and pick up what little you can when you can. It will add up over time. I've been slowly building up a cache of .308 ammo since I bought my Ruger .308 on Dec 30. Forty rounds here, a hundred rounds there. I've probably acquired 600 rounds or so that way since the first of the year. I have a personal goal of keeping 1000 rounds on hand for each rifle I own (5,000 for an AR or AK). Back after the first panic in 2009, when ammo was still on the shelves at the big box stores (in my case WM and Academy) I'd go in once a week and pick up three boxes of either .223 or 7.62x39. Over time, I ended up with plenty of ammo in these calibers. Can't do that right now, as it either isn't on the shelf at all (WM) or there is a one box limit (Academy). But that will pass, and when it does, I'll start picking up some more .308 that way. Meanwhile being patient but attentive pays off: today I should receive 100 rounds of Herter's .308 from Cabela's that I ordered a week ago at $12 per box of 20. Of course, it is all gone now. But who knows what I'll find this week, or next? The tortoise wins this race.

Guess you haven't seen this: Out of sock. No backorder. Its on every site I do business with so what now
Oh I know. You go stand in line nd hope that some ammo is put out so you can buy your one box of ammo or whatever the retail dealer allows you to purchase. One thing is for sure you can not replace what you shoot under these conditions. Its probbly time to get involved with the airsoft crowd.

email notifications of new stock

A number of sites allow you to at least sign up for email notification when the stuff comes back into stock. If you have a smart phone you can react almost instantly. If you don't have a smart phone you can send the alerts to an email gateway that will send a text message to your dumb phone, thus getting instant notification. It's a hassle compared to back ordering but it usually works.

I backordered 3 thirty round and 2 twenty round mags direct from Ruger for my mini 14 back in February and they arrived last week. I noticed that there was an ad for a couple of used thirty round mags in the classifieds for almost double what I paid by waiting.

Parker51 - the conversation in that ad is what inspired me to post this.

And even with many suppliers not accepting backorders, things are still turning up. I watch the classifieds here and have been able to get some things that way, and have also gotten some magazines from Cabelas through backorder.

Email notifications only work if the website's operator has them configured to go out immediately, as opposed to batches.

Ordered 10,000 small pistol primers a few weeks ago from midway after seeing they were in stock. Got my notification that they were in stock the next morning, after they had sold out. So don't put too much faith in the email notifications, it's still worth doing the leg/mouse work.

Thats true and I've made good use of my smartphone.

Have Credit Card and Smart Phone will travel.

This is an excellent idea for all who've been able to get in backorders before the queues became too long and most companies switched to those "notify me" links.

However, the flip side to this, and I currently find myself in this boat, is that I've put out a substantial amount of back orders over the past three months. I hope they don't get filled all at once. I hope my powders, primers, and bullets all trickle in slowly over 3-4 months. Not that I'm willing to cancel any of them, but I'm not spending my discretionary income on anything else at all.
