Don't take being armed as meaning you won't get killed...

It appears that he exchanged fire with the woman who attempted to rob him and they both died.

Well, this sucks.

I'm sorry for the loss of what sounds like a great person who left the world better than he found it.

This confirms what we all know; there are no guarantees. Crime is a deadly business and sometimes the bad guys win.

Let's not forget that this was a premeditated ambush. Under the circumstances I think the gentleman did all right and better than most, notwithstanding chairborne ranger rhetoric. Far better than I would have done, that's for sure.

To the OP: if there is any sort of memorial fund to help family or cover expenses, please mention it.

I need to add a peephole. My wife says she hates the way they look. I think she'd hate the way I look dead more.

RIP

I did read the story and I hope they get the chair as well. They charged the brother. “Michael Antoninius Weatherspoon is charged with murder, attempted armed robbery and conspiracy.” And that: “The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.” Owen you were sure quick to jump on Smith. Did you read the story? Looks to me like others could be involved. I pick up a lot of information from THR and I always enjoy surfing all the information but I almost never post. I had to on this one. I’m not looking for a keyboard battle and most likely will not respond further on this subject.

We need a salute emocon.

This was a man who did what needed doing.

His life is an encouragement and roll-model to us all.

(SALUTE)

Rest in Peace Brother! Thank you for taking that scum out with you.

Sorry to hear about your friend Butch, please pass any condolences to the family if seen.

As far as answering the door at my house, if we don't know who you are, it won't get answered, and, if its just before dark and afterward, we won't answer it anyway! I've always got my SP 101 on my side, everywhere I go, hopefully, I can get whom ever is there thats up to no good, before I go down also!

We need a salute emocon.
(SALUTE)

Absolutely. Here's my salute along with a serious lump in my throat. This soldier survived Vietnam but died at the hands of a citizen that enjoyed freedoms that he served and fought for. Sir, thank you for your service and may you rest in peace. :Salute:

Tamika,, he should never have opened the door. Condolences to his family,, so sad.

I know how you feel. My grandfather was a WWII veteran and was involved in one such altercation that gratefully ended well. He was attempting to collect money from an individual who had promised to pay my mother for rear-ending her car but disappeared instead. The guy was in his car making a drug deal with a passenger at the time and tried to pull a revolver from the center console after smugly refusing to give up any money. Fortunately my grandfathers training in the military police kicked in and probably saved his life. The bad guy was staring down the barrel of his own revolver before he could even get a good grip on it. My grandfather died this past year of Alzheimers and I miss him every day. Reading this story brings a lump to my throat because it reminds me of the kind of person he was. His generation lived at a time in history where you didn't have to worry so much about whether your doors were locked or who might be on the other side. I am truly sorry for your loss, and I hope this veteran at least gets full military honors at his funeral. He died doing a service to his country.

As to doors, we always keep ours locked now; even during the day. We lock the doors behind us if we plan on being gone long, and knock on the door to be left back in after whoever is answering the door confirms that a family member is on the other side. we hate to be that way, but there is a high-security prison nearby as well as two juvenile detention centers from which the occupants escape regularly. They tackled a huge one on our lane a few years ago following a breakout. Our vigilance level certainly went up after that and a few other nonrelated incidents.

It's really not that the times are all that different, it's ubanization. In the days when one didn't have to lock their door and could leave the keys in their cars isn't necessarily past. When I lived in a small village in NW Alaska I went on vacations down to the South 48 leaving my place unlocked and the keys in my truck. Lots of people used to live in very small population centers and could do that but not so much any more since most villages are now towns or small cities. Cities have always been loci of criminality, from the middle ages to modern times large cities have been more crime ridden because with so many people it's easier for a criminal to remain anonymous and safer from discovery. People never really change much, the grafitti at Pompei and earlier prove that pretty well.

That's why In that closed thread, I said all the preparing in the world dosen't help unless you figure in the likellyhood of eventually getting shot, no matter what you have stashed away.At least he got the assxxx, on his way out. Another reason to carry at home, even there your not safe. Anyone knocks on my door at night gets asked who are you and what are you doing here, followed by Go away, "if I don't know them" and i am holding a 45 in my hand, and the phone in the other, never stand in front of the door , luckally I have a room right there with concrete walls. Shooting through my door will only tell me where you are. Also no lights are on other than exterior. I keep putting off installing cameras we should all have them at least front and rear.Pretty soon your going to need body armor to watch tv. It gets worse every month, they tried to pass a bill to drug test all people on federal assistance programs, but when a senator said it should include members of the senate also, it got canned. I just get a funny feeling that someone is going to try and take away our right to carry as mentioned by Ginsburg the other day, when she said to the Egyption President, "quote"“I can’t speak as to what the Egyptian experience should be” she said, “because I am operating under a rather old Constitution, the United States in comparison to Egypt is a very new nation, yet we have the oldest Constitution still in force in the world…” "end quote". That says it all, 1 more term and this guy will try to undermine our Constitution by claiming it is obsolete. Thanks to KrisAnne Hall for this excellent article: http://krisannehall.com/

Lessons for us all! Get a peep hole and never open the door to strangers.
RIP Butch and God Bless You ole Warrior for taking out the Trash before you meet St Pete.

exavid, even small bush villages aren't immune. There are places in the sticks up here where the thieves won't just break in and steal stuff, they will steal your HOUSE. Every piece of lumber, every copper wire, every bit of insulation. I remember one guy who stole his neighbor's roof out in Willow. The whole roof!
