I'm interested in a 357 Sig. I know they are interchangeable with 40SW but have also heard you can use 9x19mm in them with a new barrel.

Is this true? Could I buy the 357 and if I don't like it go back to a 9mm for only a couple hundred bucks?

Here is the SIG situation as I understand it. (Others, feel free to check in and correct any of my incorrect ideas.)

The .40/.357 has a wider breech face than the 9mm. Therefore, you can buy (for instance) a SIG 229 in either .40 S&W OR .357 SIG and get a SIG barrel in the other caliber. They will interchange with no problems AND use the same recoil spring and even mags.

However, the 9mm GUNS can not be thusly converted. You can, however, buy AFTERMARKET 9mm barrels for the WIDE FACED (again, for example 229's in 40/357) and have a 3-in-1 gun. I am not sure if the recoil springs and/or mags will work when using the 9mm barrel. Others can tell you I am sure.

I can only speak for the P229 since I have one, with my 229 (.40) you need an aftermarket BarSto barrel to convert to 9mm and even then you may have to fiddle around with the barrel to make it fit right. I havent tried to put one in myself but I've heard from others who have. Dont know what they do as far as the mags go.

Allright thanks guys.

I would be ordering the P229. I'm not real sure I'll care for the 357 but it does seem interesting none the less and seems to be a somewhat safe buy with the 9mm and 40 barrels available.

I really enjoy both the .40 S&W and the .357 SIG out of my 229. Either is more accurate than I can shoot so I can't give a vote for either one as far as accuracy goes. I think the idea for a multiple caliber gun is a good and very efficient road to take. Sure is fun too.
