I have an older 1979 Thompson center Renegade with double set triggers . My question is ,why did double set triggers fall into disfavor with modern rifles ? Thanks :Kevin :scrutiny:

Many of the better Euro guns are now available with a single set trigger, and standard triggers can now be about as good as the old set triggers anyway. Examples include most custom triggers and factory triggers such as the Savage Target accutrigger.

Double set triggers have a long lock time compared to a modern bolt action.

The classic double set trigger on a flint or percussion gun is really two triggers in one when you dig into it. Once you have set the trigger, the trigger releases a spring loaded piece that hits the sear for the hammer, thus releasing the hammer. A lot going on in there when something like the Mauser action just releases the sear and the striker falls.

I have a sporterized 98k with a double set, I love it. you have the option of not using the set and having a standard pull weight or to use the set and have a real hair trigger. mine can be set so light that I can actually blow on it and it go's off....I dont keep it that light but I do keep it scary light, maybe 2 ounces

Probably 2 readons: cost and simplicity. A good aftemarket trigger like a Timney or Jewell won't cost much and they are very simple , so there's not much to go wrong. Double set triggers cost more and don't give you anything a stock single set trigger like a CZ does.
