I've always been a traditionalist with 1911s, running 230 grain Hydrashock or Golden Sabres...but got into Double Taps for 9mm and 357Sig.
The Double Taps are NOt on the approved Ammo list from Wilson, but has anyone used the 230 grain Double Taps in their Wilson? I like them in other calibers, and would be interested in them if they don't shorten spring life or damage the weapon. Thoughts fron our experienced members?
If you intend to use this as a forum for over penetration speeches and piling on, please don't post.

As I understand all of Double Tap's .45acp 230 grain defense loads don't over-penetrate, so I'm not sure what you're worried about. (The 255 grain Equalizer load is a different story however.)

As for the ammo damaging your gun or shortening spring life, I don't believe you have anything to worry about. Is your Wilson plus P rated? Yes? Then I would proceed without qualms.

I hope this helped.

Thanks Ray...The over penetration comment wasn't aimed at you...but since my return after a one year hiatus, it seems there is a group of " penetration police" determined to hijack threads to steer conversations to over penetration...and sadly they are often wrong...diligent, lond winded and determined...but wrong...I had surgery today, and am honestly not up to their comments...thanks again for your input...you were a help.

That sounds awfully hot for a 230gr bullet. It might be all right for carry and occasional function verification, but I wouldn't feed a 1911 a steady diet of it.

I will respectfully disagree that 1,000 fps is to hot for a good quality 1911. I believe the published data falls short of the max pressure load of 21,000*psi (140*MPa) for the 45 ACP. Maybe a newer recoil spring is advised but the gun is very capable of these speeds with a 230 grain bullet.

Hello OP,

You're very welcome, and I'm thankful I could be a help!

Stoky, yes, plus p ammunition will wear out a gun and parts faster. However, on a modern-day production all-steel Plus P rated 1911 (especially a high-end gun like a Wilson) this difference is rather negligible. you won't wear it out unless you're a heavy duty target shooter or into competition shooting.
Honestly I wouldn't worry too much about feeding a plus p rated 1911 even quite hot ammo on a somewhat regular basis, and I personally think it's important to practice at least occasionally with the ammo that you plan on carrying.
Moreover, I don't expect OP to be dumping thousands of rounds of that ammo in his Wilson weekly, given how expensive Double Tap ammunition is.
So If I were OP I just wouldn't sweat it, but this is just my opinion.
Additionally, I hope your surgery went well OP. Take care

I hope this helped
Love from Ray
