Has anyone tried this? For now it appears to be the woods load I've been looking for!!!

Seems like an excellent choice for killing bears if all you have is a .45 auto. Not sure how quickly it would work though.

I have the Doubletap 147gr+P 9mm FMJ Flat Nose round, also intended for trail defense. It's supposed to do 40"+ penetration in gel. That would probably kill a bear too. But probably not before it sat down and enjoyed eating me...

It should at least get enough penetration to reach a bear's or moose's vitals, and the bullet shape should help when penetrating bone at an angle. You can't expect much more than that out of an ordinary pistol caliber.

Interestingly, the .40 S&W woods load from DoubleTap has a 200 grain WFNGC bullet that gives it a smaller overall diameter (of course), similar sectional density, and practically the same meplat diameter of about 8 mm. That's three different bullet designs intended for similar purposes in the three major autoloader pistol calibers. :scrutiny:

Looks like a good "Bear" load But... There are other considerations. It is a semi-wadcutter. Some 45s will feed them reliably. Some pistols, even of the highest quality, won't. In a dynamic, stress situation, where one may be firing from unusual positions, things like bears, foliage, clothing, etc may slow down the slide, etc, etc, causing malfunctions. I don't know that I'd depend on a SWC bullet to be functionally reliable in an auto where it must absolutely work. You may not have both hands to get the gun back into action if there is a malfunction. I would probably prefer a proven, functionally reliable, jacked bullet load in an auto, even if it's paper ballistics were less formidable.

I say this having owned, carried and used a lot of different types of semi-auto pistols, since my first surplus 1911A1 purchased in the mid sixties. ymmv

Seems like their aim is to provide people who use all the major calibers with a reasonable last ditch defensive load against large 4 legged predators.

I'm good with that. :)

True it is not the "ideal" round for killing a predator in a defense situation, but......what is??? its all preference and every gun/round out there gives up something in turn for its advantages. The .45 auto is what I carry and in Colorado its all blackies and cats, I feel Plenty confident in it, but this is not meant to be "ANOTHER BEAR THREAD" so lets not make it one. It's a cool round and the only one like it I have found so far. Hopefully someone will get to try them soon..........cause I'm broke:banghead::rolleyes:

I agree proper function is paramount, but if your gun feeds these reliably then they will be leaps and bounds more effective for big critters than a FMJ round; they're hard, tough and have a nasty meplat that is gonna destroy a lot of tissue
