DoubleTap .45 Auto Rim- Too Hot for M1917 Colt?

I have a nice shooter grade M1917 Colt New Service (US Army Issue). Is DoubleTap's .45 Auto Rim load featuring a 255 gr. LSWC @ 904 fps (463 fpe) too hot for my gun?

Sometimes I like to pack my old veterans when I take the family camping/hiking in the Colorado mountains. That DoubleTap load would appear to be great for general purpose protection from various 2 and 4 legged predators, but I don't want to hurt my gun.

Would the Black Hills offering be better- 255 gr. LSWC at 750 fps (318 fpe)?

Just as a note, I am looking at factory ammo only right now, not handloads...

Thanks,

Hunter

Well it says right there on thier web-site they are loaded to 16,000 PSI.

Standard pressure .45 ACP is loaded to 21,000.
And +P is loaded to 23,000.

SAAMI for the .45 AR is limited to only 15,000.
It has always been under-loaded in factory ammo for some strange reason.

I do not think they will hurt your gun at all in the limited amounts most of us can afford to shoot of them.

BTW: That very same 255 gr. LSWC @ 904 fps sounds an awful lot like the old .45 Colt BP factory load that the New Service was also chambered in & expected to safely handle.

That was my thought as well. I was just a bit concerned about the much smaller case volume of the Auto Rim versus the "long" Colt to achieve the same velocity.

You are using this in a revolver chambered for the 45 ACP so it should not be a problem.

I have not used factory ammo for a long time but I load 255 SWC and 270 SWC for my S&W 1917s and M25-2s. I do baby the 1917s because of their ages but standard loads are fine.
