I'vw been looking around the internet and called some folks to see if anyone would dovetail in a front sight. Some folks won't and some folks only will do it on an octagon barrel but I can't find anyone that will put one in on a round barrel such as a Dragoon or 61' Navy.

Anyone have any luck finding someone?

The entire thing is brass...one piece. It almost glows in the dark it is so bright and easy to see.

It was a $125.00...and worth it. You can't see that the front is slightly backcut and serrated. The dovetail is perfect. It was the design I asked for and Clements does primo work.

I do them also. That sight (pictured above) is a modified SKINNER sight. Ask the fellers here I do them a couple three different ways.

PM me a cell number and I'll text you a couple pics....

Regards, HH

Excuse the poor cell phone picture.............
This is the same sight as Savit260's but the sides are milled at an angle and then it has been antiqued on the sides (still bright on the edge) and reprofiled somewhat.

Here is one I did on my snubby 1860.

The sight is a rifle sight I had on hand, silver blade, brass base. A hacksaw, dovetial file and about 30 minutes of work and it was done. I have since corrected the windage and bent the base to conform to the barrel.

I have also done one with a longer base, and when sighted in, I wrapped the extended base around the barrel making it look like a banded front sight.

Those sights are great and thanks for the information and pics guys. I would like the sight to be almost like an original sight but dovetailed into a blued steel base.
Am I making any sense?

HH, can that even be done on a round barreled Colt?

Simple answer..........no

I would love to have something like that also but have never been able to find anything even close.

Thanks for the info HH. And that’s exactly the response I was getting from other folks who install sights, “It cannot be done the way you want it.”

Crawdad1, you want a sight similar to one found on a Colt 1860 but inlet into a steel base? Or the Colt 1851 foresight? Either one should not be that hard to make. I know many of the muzzleloading sutlers have steel based sights, some without blades, so there is a start. Not sure if there are any off the shelf models.

I'd say that the closest you'd get to something that is shaped to appear more or less stock when seen from a bit of a distance on a foggy day would be what HH has shown in post #9. But with the rather squarish shape rounded to look more like the rounded form from an 1873 sight. That's about what it would take to get it tall enough and have a dovetail for windage and still blend in reasonably well with the barrel.

Thanks!

I have spent 30 years looking so please, PLEASE.......if anyone knows of the sight Strawhat is referencing post the info here.

I have made a number of sights and even tried to get some jeweler friends involved, sure SEEMS easier than it really is.

I got close once with a vendor once but they quit carrying it....
Track of the Wolf has plenty of rifle sights that are LARGE like the one posted above on the short barrel (I guess they look smaller 3 feet away down the barrel).

The Uberti dovetail 1858 sight gets used a lot....

The Skinner sight is available in steel and brass and can be modded quite a bit.

The Log Cabin Shop (Lodi, Ohio) carries a front sight base, part number 50S88, and a variety of other sights.

Sorry, the link doesn't connect with the online catalog. Type the part number into the search engine and the listing will come up.

Thanks for the link strawhat!

Just a word of advise for the uninitiated here:
You want a dovetail of about .80 deep by .375 wide or you will be dovetailing into the bore on a full length 1860 pistol.
The sight base above MIGHT look porportional on a Dragoon or Walker but if you cut a dovetail that big and it doesn't, well now yer stuck......

The ROA's original sight is pretty long on the barrel. The dove tail needs to be cut so the new sight/dovetail covers the entire area where the original sight was removed.
