Hi everyone,

I am new to the firum and I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with.

Not long ago I purchased a DPMS Panther Flat-Top AR in .204 Ruger[/B]. It has a free floated 24 in. stainless fluted barrel, Jard trigger, tactical charging lever, bi-pod stud, Hogue grip, a Skeleton stock, with Barska 8-32 x 50 illuminated, parallax adjustable scope. I thought that it might make a fun varmint gun, being semi-automatic. It will not shoot, however. I have tried BL-C(2), H322, Benchmark, CFE-223, as well as a number of other powders. I have prepared and carefully shot both Berger 35 gr. and Hornady 32 gr. bullets with all of these powders, and still no load that will shoot anywhere near 1.00" consistently. Most loads are shooting around 1.5" to 2.5". There have been some groups in the 0.650 area, but they have not been repeatable. This is the worst shooting rifle that I have ever owned. I have been a reloader for over half-a-century, a successful benchrest shooter, shot on the U.S Olympic Team, and am a gunsmith who builds custom benchrest rifles and very accurate varmint and tactical rifles. I do not, however work on AR type rifles. In fact, I know very little about them. I only give you this background so that you will not assume that it is my reloading technique or my shooting ability. The last rifle that I built, a 20 VarTarg, shoots everything at or below .250", and many groups under 0.100.

My question is whether any one else out there is having accuracy problems with their DPMS rifles. I do not know what else to try. I have checked the throat and the headspace and found both to be fine. I have changed scopes with no luck. The only thing that I have not yet done is to change barrels.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I guess the obvious first response is to look at the scope & mount, chamber dimensions, and barrel. The vast majority of the DPMS rifles shoot pretty well. I would really look at that scope and mount first.

I have a DPMS, 24", fluted stainless upper in 204 Ruger. I put it on my 233 lower and have had what I consider pretty good accuracy for a gas gun. Groups under and inch. About 40 years reloading and many years as a competitive shooter.

I would echo what you have heard. First check the bases, then the scope, take a real close look at the crown.

I once bought a Remington 700 BDL heavy barrel in 223 and had the same situation you are in. I ended up discovering a series of lateral scatches in the barrel about 6" from the muzzle. I had a benchrest shooter/gunsmith put on a Lilja barrel and square everything up. It is still the most accurate rifle I own. I ended up with a surprising combination working best for me in my 204. Nosler 32 grain bullet and H335 powder. Hope you are able to find a simple, inexpensive solution, and welcome to THR.

The crown is good. I have inspected it with my bore scope and it looks good.

Thanks for the suggestions Robert 101, but I have scoped the chamber, bore, chamber, and crown; and I have checked the rings and mounts, and tried two different Leupold scopes with no improvement in groups. If I was sure that a new, custom barrel would fix the problem, I would just buy a Lilja blank, and fit and chamber it; but I don't know if that would solve my problem.

Thanks for the welcome Steve. If it were a Remington I would know exactly what to do with it, since I build so many custom rifles on Remington 700 actions; but I do not have much in depth knowledge about these AR rigs. Thanks for the ideas.

Jef,
My only other suggestion is to check the load. Sometimes these AR's like to be loaded with a cartridge length close to max. I don't have a Ruger 204 and shoot a fair amount of 308. My DPMS TAC20 likes Varget powder and cartridge very close to max length.

I say this because when I shoot Hornady 150 grainers (cheap target bullet) too short of an OAL my groups open up to about 1.5" to 2". Just a thought.
