I swore I would not buy one unless it was a Colt.

Price was right, timing was right. Dr.Rob has a new Colt 6920.

I haven't even cleaned it yet. Blizzarding here at moment so I might not shoot it this weekend. But ohhhh how I want to.

I picked up two Colt mags and two stainless C-products mags to play around with. Already discovered my varmint loads (Nosler 50gr ballistic tip & 27gr of 2230) won't fit my magazines. Good thing I have a lot of PMC and UMC 55 gr FMJ to screw around with.

Thanks for all the advice from the AR gurus, I'll likely be picking your brains again.

very nice. how much did you pick it up for? i wanted a colt too but they were too pricy.

Jensen Arms in Loveland CO listed them Weds. on Gunbroker for $1499.95. With tax here (picked it up in person) $1601. They have a pallet full of them.

Nice, now strip the stock, handle, p-grip, fore-grip, and gas block... Replace with tacticool counterparts, and paint!!!!!

2.26" is the longest that will fit in a regular magazine. Slight bit more with a Pmag. You probably want to stick with at least 55gr bullets and heavier for the 1:7 twist also.

I knew they were loaded long for a single shot varmint rifle. It's not a big deal, like I said I have a variety of ammo.

I was thinking of a red dot or C-More style 'scout sight' at some point, but that's about all the bells and whistles I can imagine putting on it. I'll probably even get a (gasp) leather sling! I like the idea of still using the carry handle and having a 'reflex' sight, but from what I've read the C-More is hard to zero. Any other candidates?

The easiest solution is to remove the carry handle, and use the rail to mount an Aimpoint, then add a smaller folding rear sight if you still want an iron sight on there. If you want to mount a sighting device on the forearm, you will need a free floated railed forend to provide a suitably hard mounting point. This is a considerably more involved installation, and is more costly.

Yeah but then it wouldn't look the same. I've found several mounting rails that fit the carry handle that extends a rail over the forearm. What I'm thinking of is something as unobtrusive as the LaRue iron dot for the AK.

Congrats on the Colt 6920. The price was decent considering the current market.

I ordered my 6920 the day after the election and receive it the day after the inaguration. I got it for the old price of $1250, but when those pre-orders were filled, the price went up.

Before you pick an optic, what do you want to do with the rifle and how does the optic fit in with your plans? Answer that and you can get better advice on what optic to get and how to set it up.

Be aware that the carry handle mounts for optics place the optic so high that it is difficult to get a good check weld on the rifle. That's the real advantage of the flat top rail system.

I understand you wanting to keep the look of the rifle by maintaining the carry handle and mounting the optic on that. Just be aware it is the less then perfect solution. Up to you though.

This is the kind of set -up I mean. The optic is over the handguard, but attached to the carry handle. C-More suggests this sight won't fit removable handle AR's like mine.

Rob,

I've used ARs set up that way, A1s with a fixed carry handle and a red dot on a gooseneck mount. It works. For fixed CH weapons, you really only have three options if you want to add a red dot. You can do what you've pictured there, you can replace the handguards with a GOOD rail and mount the optic there, or you can put it on top of the CH. I don't like the last one, but either of the other two work, and work well.

However, neither of them are as good a solution as just putting the optic on the flat top and buying a fold down BUIS. If you want to go the route you have suggested, have at it. But just putting it on the flat top is more practical, flexible, lighter, has less to go wrong, and has a better field of view.

Good choice. I've done business with them as well.
I think Zak Smith and Ray are business partners elsewhere.

I have a Colt Sporter Target Model from the early '90's. It is your basic M-16A2 look-alike with a 20" barrel and built-in carry handle. Just recently I mounted an Aimpoint on the carry handle using an A.R.M.S. #16A mount. While I could use the scope this way I decided to add a Cherokee Delta cheek piece. This gave me a solid cheekweld and a perfect head position to use the scope.

It is a solid setup and works very well. However, if I could do it over again, I'd get a flat top model to avoid using the cheek piece.

I was thinking of a red dot or C-More style 'scout sight' at some point, but that's about all the bells and whistles I can imagine putting on it. I'll probably even get a (gasp) leather sling! Aimpoint is the only way to fly. 50,000 hours battery life on most of them, turn it on, leave it on. Very, very reliable and durable, too. Yes, they are a bit expensive if you look at raw purchasing price but quality gear is everything. You've started down the quality road with the Colt rifle, now complement it with quality optics.

I can't tell you what gooseneck mount to get, though.

And get thee some Magpul PMAGS, either get them where you can or get on backorder. Lancer L5 mags are also good, and the standard old GI Aluminum mags are good.

Nice rifle! About the closest thing you can get to an M4 without an eight year commitment.

Good to see folks are sniffing out decent deals. Not the rock-bottom Ray Tanner prices from those heady days way back in 'aught eight, but great by the standards of the new normal.

I found the package deals LaRue has on his website are very competative with most internet prices. I've used one of the forward mounts and now have an Aimpoint M3 in a LaRue mount. Better system. Bravo Company is the "go to" place for magazines and parts. :)

Rob,
I wouldn't recommend mounting any optic to a removable carry handle. The reason is very simple. You now have an extra mounting point to worry about loosening up.

The C-More suffers from durability and reliability problems in hard use. There are several better options out there.
