Got my SBR tax stamp today, yeah!

Mailed it in Jan 11, got it today April 11.

So now I'd like opinions as to which stock would be best.

Easiest would seem to be the under-folder as that is the trunnion that is already there, but these are my least favorite AK stock. Other downside is I'd be making holes in the receiver so if I mess up its really bad news.

Next easiest would be to drill and tap the existing trunnion and use the VZ-58 stock. I really like the way these work on my VZ-58. I've heard there is not enough metal in the under-folder trunnion for this to really work well, but mine appears to be about 1/8th" thick and I would plan to add a jam nut with and red Loc-Tite.

Final choice would be to remove the rear trunnion, add a standard trunnion and use the Romanian/Polish side folder. I don't have a feel for how difficult removing the original rear trunnion would be and have no idea what I'm up against to rivet in a new one.

Option two is where I lean, and would have option three as a fall-back if it isn't strong enough.

Since I first started thinking about doing this a couple of years ago I've accumulated parts for all three options, so availability is not a problem.

You forgot option 4: Drill and tap the rear face for an ACE modular stock. You'd still need some steel to back it up, IMHO (the rear face isn't designed to bear a load, but just to keep crap out of the receiver).

My opinion is gonna be with your #3 and my #4 :)

Main problem with the option 4, buying more stuff is not in the budget this year.

While I agree option three is best overall, welding unused holes and drilling new ones has the same issues as #1 in terms of messing with the receiver. I've got a Romanian rear trunnion from a parts kit and getting out the old rivets doesn't make me excited about getting out the existing rivets in a now rather expensive receiver.

Then again, as I said I've no idea what I'm up against to rivet in a new trunnion -- any tips?

Option #2 seems the safest bet as if it starts comping loose, its not much of a difference from just doing option #3 from the start.

I'm kind of surprised the early voting favors the under-folder. I've Chinese, Yugo and Romanian under-folders and they all are my least favorite AK stocks -- I got them just for the "evil" factor and to PO the antis :)

I've got all the tooling you need to safely remove the existing rear block. At that point, you can go up the street to the muffler shop and have'em tig up the holes.

Once that's done, I also have the tooling to install rear blocks.

O'course, I don't do any of it for you, but I can show you how.

I have one underfolder, for exactly the reason you state - for the "evil factor". I prefer anything but that design. . .

Thanks for the offer, nalioth, I'll take you up on it if the VZ58 stock doesn't work out. Seems "free" to try it first and then go you your route if I don't like it or it doesn't hold up.

I'm very impressed with the "US" made "Krinkov" muzzle brake, it really made the recoil straight back whereas without it the pistol jumps like a 44Mag.

I' working on it this weekend, but didn't get far today because Home Depot had a sale on plants so was doing the Catch-22 digging holes and filling them back in to keep the wife happy.

Here is one that I did that a several people saw and are having me build.

Its got Magpul furniture. I like the stock because it locks up tighter than a Milspec stock and the grip is more ergonomic. The Midwest industries quad rail is a bit much, but some people like to hang stuff on their guns.

This stock collapses and folds for storage and is adjustable for any sized shooter.

This pic is just to give you an idea. They arent hard to build and they shoot very well.

So you just screw the Ace adapter to the rear trunnion as-is? Pretty slick, if that's the case. :)

Where do you source the block, side folder, and AR stock adapter? I've seen prices from $50 to $200+ for parts like those, and I'm curious if your source is on the better end of the price spectrum. ;)

Either way, very cool build. Making me think I might go that route instead of the milled underfolder I have sitting here waiting on the stamp...

If you're gonna do that, I'd stick a little square of steel back there (on the inside) to stiffen it up.

The end plate on the underfolder block only exists to keep crap out of the innards - it's not made to mount a stock on.

Well, yes, that sort of goes without saying, but I suppose I should have elucidated my comment, as you are entirely correct. :)

Standard fixed stock trunnion uses a different rivet pattern. Pretty easy to grind current rivet heads off, remove old trunnion and drill new holes for standard trunnion but welding/cleaning up of the old holes takes some skills.

That is why I'm going with the VZ-58 side-folder -- I can try it for "free" and if it doesn't work out I can remove it and install the standard rear trunnion and use the Romanian side folder.

I quickly ruled out the underfolder because mine is not a virgin block and I can't make a good enough measurement to be 100% sure its drilled for the underfolder I have.

I've done it!

Poll went for the underfolder, but this was my least favorite, and quickly dismissed once I realized my trunnion was not virgin and was drilled. I couldn't make a good enough measurement to determine is its cut would match my stock, so I eliminated this option first.

I figured the VZ-58 stock was a "free" try option as if it didn't work out I'd just remove the trunnion and install the standard rear tang trunnion to go with the Romanian/Polish side folder.

I think it turned out great! Ran 150 rounds through it today and that fake "Krinkov" break really works well, if the real one actually works better you'd likely have the recoil pushing the muzzle down :) But seriously I've never shot a rifle with this much recoil and so little muzzle rise.

Really like the way this SBR handles, its instantly become my favorite AK!

I don't see how it can't be strong enough as my rear trunnion was at least 3/8" thick and tapping the threads was a bear -- if its a "cheap casting" then Irwin taps must really be crap! Anyways I used red Loc-Tite on the threads and put a jam nut on the back with red Loc-Tite. Finally I potted the jam nut in JB Weld epoxy.

Here are a few quick photos:

All things considered, well worth the wait and $200 tax to Uncle Sam.
