It's been awhile. I haven't logged in for couple of months now. Do you think Dragon Skin Body Armor will be available some day to citizens? Thanks =):)

It's not even out of full testing yet accroding to the last two shows that highlighted it. The Forces don't even have it yet. It is some great engineering feat from what I've seen though. Magnificent technology.

It must be available to some degree, there was a guy on the snipers hide forum selling a used set a couple months ago. He said he did a few months in Iraq and was getting a set with more coverage and wanted to sell the other set he had. Big bucks, if I remember correctly he was asking some where around $4,000 for a full wrap front and back.

the special on the military channel has been repeated for six months or more, so I wouldn't base too much on that. their website list several different options but everything says call for price.

cool stuff though...

Last I read it was not authorized for wear and had failed ballistic testing.

the guy that was selling it wasn't military, I think he was a civilian contractor blackwater type.... the website shows it is NIJ certified....

there is a huge amount of politics regarding this armor and its adoption or rejection by any US service. its a local story around here, so i've taken some interest.

it appears to be a very effective armor that is unfortunately getting smeared by one rather ridiculous air force test involving weapons fire from calibers the tested set was not even rated for.

the competition took that and ran with it. pretty unfortunate, becasue i believe those attempting to discredit the product sell high quality, but previous generation tech to our soldiers, and are worried about losing a contract, as opposed to the safety of our soldiers.

Unless you are in LE or security they will not sell to private individuals. I bought a number of various vests for companies I've worked for from them and they won't even sell to me.

They showed Dragon Skin armor on The Discovery Channel's "Future Weapons".
He did a test, firing multiple rounds of different types and it held up quite well.

From what I saw, I would use it.

The "Gunny" on " 'Mail Call' visited the factory (Pinacle Armor) and conducted a live test on the Dragon Skin. He fired most of a mag from an MP5 followed by an AK47 at 20 ft. Absolutely no penetration point-blank range! Very impressive. 'Course it remains to be seen just how many copies 'Uncle Sugar'
will be down for considering the product's horrendous price tag.

Can't the current large SAPI plates take six hits, and the smaller ones that can be mounted in the side of the ribcage and over the shoulders take three hits? The way I see it, how many times is someone going to shoot someone else more than 3-6 times in the same general area? And when you consider that Dragon Skin costs twice as much as it would to provide the same level of protection (considering it is pretty rare to get shot more than 3 to 6 times in the same spot) with currently available body armor, and the whole Dragon Skin vest has to be replaced instead of individual components, it doesn't seem worth the cost to me.

I wonder if that's because they have limited inventory and only want to sell to professionals to improve their "tacticoolness", or they are elitists.

Of course. When the world switches over to phasors, ray guns and laser cannons. They'll let you have your "dragon skin body armor". :D

That's the policy. No matter how much of a proven good guy you are (CCW permit, FOID card, or whatever). I'll bet, though, you could get one if you were a judge so the company policy is not consistently applied.

It's just a business decision that your life is worth less to the company's management than is the life of those "special" people (who control the BIG bucks the company seeks).

Why should any of us support them?

laser canons? dude you'd be dead by that time.
well i asked pinnacle armor about that and they didnt' reply me yet

Doesn't make sense to need to replace the whole thing. You have to replace your SAPI plates after one hit, right? What happens if you have more than one engagement? What about the people that go out and spend time out yonder for weeks on end, and don't have the weight available to carry extra plates? There are times you'd want the extra durability.

I've said before that tech like this is going to put us back where we were before the gun, when offensive and defensive tech was about equal. We probably have the tech to make "knights" again. It's just that no one's bothered.

If they won't its just a matter of time before they have a competitor that will I think, although non leo/mil is a small market anyway.
