I've found a Romanian PSL that I'm thinking of buying for ~$700. What is the consensus on this rifle? Are there other variants out there that I should consider? Last I heard the real deal dragunov SVD's aren't imported.

PSL's aren't dragunovs, no matter how much the importers and marketers want them to be. They are, however, labeled PSL-54Cs, SSG-97s, FPKs, and Romak-IIIs (and probably others) by American marketing departments.

All the same rifle, different name and "features" depending on the vendor (but they're all the same rifle).

I was very interested in a PSL and looked into them for quite some time, the concensus was that a psl is basically a long barreled ak in 7.62x54. Accuracy is not as good as most people expect. Not necessarily bad, but not sniper quality. Someone would correct me if I did not add that they were designed as a sharp shooter's squad rifle, specifically not a snipers rifle. They were intended to extend the accurate rifle range of the squad. So the point is to be able to shoot at targets farther out than the AK, thats it. A dragunov is a completely different gun, and you are correct they are not imported as far as I know. There are some here though, but they will cost!

I decided the PSL did not fit what I wanted, although I still find them interesting, and a semi auto in 7.62x54 just has to be fun!

I had a TGI built/imported parts gun, and would advise avoiding them as mine had improper headspace from the factory and blew several primers and split cases with bulgarian light ball ammo. Gun was fun but didn't operate as expected for a new gun, needless to say i no longer own it.....

What do you want it for? If you're looking for a cheap semi-auto sniper rifle, you're going to be disappointed. They are a little more accurate than the average AK, but they're not 1/2 MOA or even 1 MOA rifles despite what you might hear on the internet. If you're looking for a fun range toy to shoot cheap 7.62x54R with, then you'll probably be pleased with it. Same thing if you just happen to like commie weapons.

Judging by my own rifle and the others I've seen, workmanship is typically Romanian. They're a little better than the WASR's though. I'd put them about on the same level as the SAR series of rifles.

A few months ago, $700 would have been a high price for the gun by itself and a low price for the gun with the scope and all the spare mags and accessories. Now, who knows? One thing's for certain, it's worth more now than it was before November 4th.

About 100 Russian Dragunovs made it into the country before the Clinton ban on importing them went into effect. Chinese versions are a bit more numerous but still pretty rare. If you go looking for one avoid the ones chambered in 308 as the conversions were not done well and they can be down right dangerous. I have owned two of the Chinese ones and they are very well made weapons and very accurate. Best ergonomics of any rifle I have owned and the scope is sweet. I zeroed my first one with 4 shots. Interesting feature of the scopes is that they have a rudimentary IR capacity built in. Not something you would want for hunting as it just shows a spot where there is a heat source but I can see where it would be great for a sniper. One of the things that got me about the chinese ones is they have a better finish than the Russian ones. At least my chinese is better than the one Russian SVD I had a chance to examine. Great rifle and the Romak does not even come close to being as good.

My advise is to just get a Finn M39 . THey shoot better but of course it doesnt have the scope. Its half the price but hell of a shooter . Can take in light and heavy ball ammo 54 Rs.

+1 on that. I love my M39, while if I had it to do over again with the PSL I would have bought an AR10 copy instead.
