Dram?

Others with more knowledge will follow, but it's basically a measure of how much powder charge the shell contains. The higher the number the more powder.

Thanks gentlemen.
Dogtown, I always forget about wikipedia, and get tired of searching through thousands of pages on google, since I always seem to type in just a little off I guess?

Do what I do when using google for something unknown (if I don't head straight to wikipedia), I enter "wiki widget" as my search terms. That way any wikipedia articles find their way to the top.

Though, come to think of it, I think wikipedia pages are always towards the top.

Dang, I thought you were offering a drink. Another useful feature of Google is to put 'define: subject' into the search. Example 'define: dram'.

A holdover from the days of blackpowder loads, it can give you SOME insight as to the shell's velocity. More and more makers are finally going to putting FPS on the box instead.

Personally, I find anything over the equal of 2-3/4 Dram Equivalent to be too much for any type of target shooting; I usually go for even less in my reloads

Dram equivilent listing denotes the smokeless powder charge used in a particular load that is equal to the blackpowder load for a specific velocity with a specific load of shot.

A blackpowder dram using FG coarse powder weight is 27.5 grains so a 3 dram load would be 82.5 grains of FG grade black gunpowder.
Depending on the specific smokeless powder and because smokeless powder is a more efficient charge, an equivilent smokeless powder load would weigh somewhere around 22 to 23 grains yet produce the same velocity with a given load of shot.HTH

Well thanks again for the help gentlemen. Going to make my decisioin easier for my upcoming dove hunt. I've always just gone hunting with my dad and always saved the money by shooting his shells. Never really payed attention to what they were.
