I have a Wheeler Drill and Tap fixture for scope mount on loan to me and I am about to do 2 Mauser receivers with barrels off. One large ring and one small ring. Is there anything I need to pay attention to? I only have 1 shot to make it right! My main concern is the hole position, how to assure they are centered. I hope using the fixture is a guarantee, but there may be still some tricks that I need to pay attention to. Thanks.

What kind of Mauser? Some of the military imports are very hard. You will need either use a carbide drill or anneal the area or both. Commercial actions should be ok.

I have used that fixture before and it works very well, had no problems with it. centers up the holes. should have two spacings for front and rear, if it is the same model

What is the correct drill hole position for large ring mauser front scope mount rear screw? In front of the top locking block (into the lug recess) or drill into the block itself? Locking block may not the correct word, I mean the thick metal area that the lug rest at.

When you mount the fixture the directions should tell you which of the holes are for the large ring and which are the small ring. fwiw I use the large ring for both. Are the barrels in the receivers or out of them?

The hole just in front of the ejection port will fall very close to the locking lug seat. It will often intersect the front edge of the seat. It is very important that you only drill deep enough to get full depth of the screw and no more. Measure the screw shank protruding from the bottom of the base. Make certain that you drill only that deep plus a very few thousandths. Chech the thickness of the receiver ring to insure that you're in the ballpark. And use a stop to prevent over drilling. When you get through the receiver ring, the resistance will go away fast and you might just run the bit down through the face of the seat.
Barrels are out. Receivers only.
I kind of remember the correct location should be as BBBBill describes, but I have a large ring that drilled and tapped by a gunsmith and the 2nd front screw hole is into the lug seat itself instead of in front of it.
