My 1891 Mauser was sporterized many years ago, and was fitted with Williams peep sights. I’m thinking of having it drilled and tapped for scope mounts, and finding a vintage scope to use, keeping it’s 60’s period look

What mounts do I need? I’ve heard any small ring mounts will work, but don’t know for sure, this being the reason I ask. Have any of you scoped an 1891, and how hard is it to drill and tap the receiver?

Can't remember thename of the company, maybe A-Square. They make no-gunsmith mounts for most military rifles. This would be an easier solution. I have a mount like that on an 303 Enfield. Good solud mount and doesn't shoot loose.

Thank you sir, I’ll check it out.
B square mounts. There used to be a lot more models in the past but you would have to go hunting on the auction sites for these (ebay gunbroker etc.)

S&K scope mounts (https://www.brownells.com/optics-mo...-scope-bases-prod12461.aspx?avs|Make_3=Mauser) according to the Q/A it will fit a 91 Mauser with some fitting. They also make some sculpted bases that might work. Mfg. website http://www.scopemounts.com/index.html?main.html

Accumounts is another but don't think he has Argy 91 mounts--could be wrong. He could tell you whether he has a model that will fit or needs to be altered.

Mauser Central used to be a good website but they disappeared with their forums. Not sure if someone backed them up.

Missed it by that much, Boom Boom. Thanks for the correction.
Only remember it because I have B-square gunsmithing tools. I confirmed by memory with Bing search engine. They got bought up by one of the bigger companies and a lot of the stuff they used to sell disappeared. Same thing with Azoom snap caps. Bigger companies often ignore small niche stuff for stuff that turns over more frequently.

boom boom, that insta mount looks like it might work. Do you think it would require major mods to the stock? I’d like to have the rifle drilled and tapped for mounts so I can mount the scope low, but I can’t find anyone locally that wants to do the job.

I never thought about it, I have 8 tools that mount on different receivers, the biggest concern when setting one of the tools up has to do with one piece mounts. I have an 1891 Argentine complete with mounts and rings. I found something I thought was seriously wrong with the rifle so I started gathering parts, lucky for me I found friends that wanted to help. I need to take the rifle to the range; the rifle was a loaner meaning when someone showed up to hunt without a rifle they got this one.
