I've got three question for all of you, first, is there any problem with a minor (16 years old) driving with a firearm to a range? The owner of the firearm would be in the passenger seat.

Second, once i turn 18 can I bring handguns my father owns to shoot if I'm allowed to own long guns but not handguns? The only answer I've gotten from the local range is that as long as I bring my own gun and ammo there's no problem there since I won't be able to purchase pistol ammo.

I left this for last because I figure it's a no, but here it goes. If the firearms were cased and unloaded (like they normally are) and the ammo in a separate box would I be able to drive on my own with them to the range when my permit allows it? By the way I live in Delaware, and before anyone says just bring dad along to shoot too, I'm the only person in my family remotely interested in firearms so a trip to the range is more of a chore to them :( any enlightenment would be great, thanks!

You need to research DE law.

I would say if the legal owner of the handgun is in the car and the handgun is being legally transported it would be in possession of the legal owner not you.

Keep in mind legal advice you get on the internet may be just what you pay for it.

As GRIZ22 said, you need to research DE law. You should not be asking legal advice from a bunch of strangers on the internet.

While it does really matter, here in Texas a minor can transport a handgun to and from the range (direct route between the two). Also, the minor must have a hand written note from their parents, signed, and contact info... The note must be presented to an officer if asked. DE might have a similar law, this is for you to find out..

Good Luck and Be Safe

Coming on 34 here...

Don't hate me because I know the law, hate me because I'm beautiful (in a masculine sense of course).

I'm in a different state than you, so you will have to verify your answers on a legitimate website or in a book of Delaware firearms laws. But where I'm from: 1) There is no issue there. 2) Where I live, this is fine. But 18 year olds are allowed to own handguns when received as a gift or obtained through a private party purchase. 3) At your age now, I am sure the answer would be no.
Once again, verify the answers you receive.

I live in WA, I'm 19 and I can legally take a pistol to the range to practice as long as it's stored in a locked box inside the car and concealed from view. However before doing this I emailed the Washington State Patrol and asked if it was ok, of course they said yes and I keep that reply printed in my vehicle when I take the handguns out to practice. If your state has a state police agency I'd ask them IN writing (via email or good ol' fashioned U.S. mail) if what you want to do is legal, if it is then keep the copy of their response in your vehicle while going to and from the range. I think most states except for wierdo places like Denver, or NYC or New Jersey an 18 year old can transport a handgun in their car. locked box, unloaded, concealed from view in the trunk and refuse consent to search if you're stopped. in WA you'd be golden but like I said check with state highway patrol/state police and see what they say
