I know that some rugers have a firing pin disconnector or whatever that allows you to dry-fire safely, but I have a Browning Challenger and a Hi-Standard Dura-matic that don't... I was considering buying a few snap-caps, but you need to retract the slide to reset the internal firing pins on these. So wouldn't the snap-cap be extracted every time? Seems like it would be a pain.

Has anyone removed the extractor on your 22 semi for dry-fire practice? Or is that another one of my stupid ideas? :D

I managed to pick up one of those plastic tray 100-round packs of .22lr dummy rounds at a gun show a few years back. Still got a healthy supply of them. I can make someone a killer deal on some of these "rounds".

Yes and yes.

Would be a lot of work but that will do.

As long as you have something between the pin and the chamber, anything solid that isn't too thin will work. Could put a notch into the rim of a snap cap or spent case and position it where the extractor would normally get ahold of the rim. The case would stay in place and you'd have to pick or knock it out when your done. You have to rotate the case after a while to not beat it down too much with the pin. Notch out the worn part and move it to the extractor side (which will rotate the case to a new area for the pin to hit).

I use a spent cartridge case as a snap cap in my Browning Buckmark. I've never had to pull the slide back far enough to eject the case when re-cocking

Everytime you fire your handgun you create a snap cap. Why people by them for rimfires is beyond me.
