Just got a new Springfield 1911 GI model. I love the gun and how accurate and soft shooting it is. I have two questions:

1. the sights for the GI model are miniscule; is ordering the upgraded sights from their discount sheet included with the gun a better systeem to see and

2. can the model be dry fired w/o dummy round in the chamber

The price for a snap cap is minimal compared to a firing pin or hammer. Its worth the few dollars to safeguard your pistol.

I agree about the snap caps, if you are going to be in dry firing session use those. I have dry fired my GI, perhaps a half dozen times since I purchased it.

The real problem in dry-firing a 1911 pattern gun is because it over-compresses the firing pin spring and in time it will take a set. To see this effect be sure the pistol is unloaded and then lock back the slide. Then using a small punch push the firing pin forward and notice how much of it sticks out the breechface. Disregard these instructions if you have a model with a positive firing pin block, but when you dry fire the effect is the same. If there is a fired case, snap-cap or dummy round in the chamber the firing pin's overtravel will be stopped and the spring will not be effected. Occasional dry firing won't hurt, and if you don't want to bother with something in he chamber while doing extensive dry firing simply replace the spring on a regular basis or use a "designatedl spring" while dry firing.

Replacing the sights with some that are more visable usually will improve your shooting.

Dry fire

Use an empty case and punch out the primer. Fill primer pocket with Silicone and let cure. First class for dry firing. :D

I dryfire all my 1911's. I don't sit in front of the TV and do dryfire drills, but I do dryfire. If I need to drop the hammer on an empty chamber, I squeeze the trigger. Kuhnhausen's Manual states to limit dryfiring no matter who tells you it is ok.
