Thinking about getting one of those short Picatinny mounts from DSA that attach to the existing shorty handguard on my AR-15. They are just a simple, flat rail that attaches to the handguard via four threaded studs that protrude through the holes of the handguard and into a flat plate on the underside of the handguard using nuts to secure. I will be using this to mount an Eo-tech holographic defraction sight. My handguard fits very tight and seems rock solid, will this method be stable enough? Thanks

Handguard mounted rails and railed handguards are stable enough to mount flashlights, fore end grips and such, but they aren't really stable enough to mount a sight. You will eventually get some rotation in the handguards. This if couse will throw off your zero.

A better bet would be to get something like an ARMS extended rail on your flatop reciever, or ARMS#39A2 for a standard A2 rifle if you want the "scout" look.

ARMS products are rather pricey, so if you are on more of a budget you might want to look at the Bushmaster Modular Accessories Extended Rail System.

At $35.00 they definitely beat the price of the ARMS products.

Redlg155,

Where can you get that Bushmaster Modular Accessories Extended Rail System for 35.00? The Bushmaster web sight list them for 69.95. I'd love to get one.

If being able to use your iron sights with the EOTech attached are important to you, none of the raised rail options like the ARMS or Bushmaster will work. The EOTech will be too tall.

If you can afford it, and you really want your optic forward, I would suggest you consider a free float tube with rails. If you don't want 4 full rails like the MANY options out there ranging from $100 (Oly Arms FIRSH) to $300+ (KAC, Daniels Defense), then a modular one like either one of Redlg155's would do the trick ;)

He can fill you in better, and in fact I've wondered which one he prefers between the two, but they're both nice. My favorite of course being the KKF.
