Forearm rail best way to mount VFG and light on stock A2?

Hey all. I'm looking to mount a vertical foregrip and light on a mid-length AR with an A2 front sight assembly/gas block. I really don't want a quad rail on this gun - are those little Picatinny strips that attach to handguards any good? I figure I could fit a VFG and light on a 6" section, although the middy ones are a bit longer. Are these "forearm rails" solid enough? It appears to me that they only mount to the handguard, but surely there's more to it than that.

Any experience?
