I’m in desperate need of a good shotgun that is capable of being a great hunting gun during the season and being the home defender while not out hunting. I decided that I would do best starting with a Remmy 11-87, something like The Sportsman model. Then in a few weeks save a few bucks and get a 18.5” barrel and a +2mag extension.

The second option would be to get a Remmy police model (maybe one with ghost rings or rifle sights) and get a Remington 26” barrel and put a wooden dowel in the mag to limit it to 2 rounds.

1. If a get an 11-87 Sportsman or 11-87P I would like the ability to shoot 3” mag, can they?

2. What kind of problems would I have by changing parts out ( barrel and mag cap to remove the wooden dowel or whatever)

3. If I get the 11-87P with ghost rings, can I remove the rear ghost rings?

If you have any other suggestions thanks for them in advance

How about a Mossberg 500a Combo? Comes with 28" VR Barrel and 18" barrel for HD. I got mine for $199.99.

1. Yes.

2. None. 5 minute job.

3.No.

Good choice, though not the only one. I suggest handling and firing a few shotguns and see if one speaks to you. "Feel" is important.

HTH....

What Dave said.

Best bet for versatility is to stick to smoothbore configuration in all your barrels, and keep your rifle sights on the short barrel. That way there are no extra bits on the receiver to get in the way when using the gun for wingshooting etc.

I don't think you will have a lot of luck finding a rifle sighted barrel for the 11-87 that is shorter than 21", yes they do make them for the police gun but finding one for sale separately is another matter entirely. Maybe you can get one direct from Remington, that I can't tell you. Best bet for that barrel might well be to buy the Police gun and then get a longer barrel for field use later.

A lot of shotguns are versatile enough to fill your bill, if you are new to shotgunning (or even not new) my best recommendation is that you try several makes/models before you make up your mind, and don't decide on the semi vs pump question until you have sampled the wares a bit.

Stay safe,

I use a ghost ring 18" barrel Mossberg 500 for both HD and "still hunting" deer. I replaced the overlong LOP factory synthetic stock with an Outers Cadet stock, added a sling, and was good to go.

I only use slugs for hunting deer, so it suits my needs perfectly. I think so far it's taken
2 deer
2 armadillo
1 squirrel

Incidentally, I know you may have heard that firing 12 ga 00 buck could disturb the earth's orbit, but one round may not be enough for squirrel! Works great at about 5 meters for 'dillo, though.

I already have a mossy and its a good gun, but as by dfariswheel

No knock on the Mossberg, but you'll probably regret buying the Mossberg Chevy instead of the Remington Police Cadillac.

Im still not 100% on how to work the quotes & 0% on posting pics.

Well folks,, christmass is coming around and theres a chance I'll be getting a Remmy 1187 SPS Camo. I'll start lookingh for an 18.5"-20" barrel, hopefully something with rifle sights (I dont care that the barrel will be a different color than the rest of the gun) and ill need a mag extension.

The main question is, is there a difference between the stock of the SPS Camo and 1187P becides the SPS being Camo.

Thanx
Gavin

OK fellas, lets see if you can work your magic another time. Looks like an 11-87 sps camo may be on its way. I just got an idea and it might not be the best or anything but does anyonw know of a camo forgrip with a wepon light on it? It would come in handy when the gun is in HD mode and would probably be nice when looking for a stand at 5:30 in the pich black morning. A matching camo mag extension kit would also be a nice add on to if any are known of.
