A buddy of mine is selling his 3" 1187 Sportsman and I'm thinking about buying it. I'm looking for a good, reliable all purpose shotgun. I'll mainly be using this for duck and dove hunting but will also use it some for sporting clays. For those of you that have experience with the 11-87, is it reliable enough for 100+ rounds of sporting clays? Also, how about several rounds in the dove fields? Any input would be much appreciated.

100+? are you talking about firing 100 individual shots, or are you talking about 100 rounds of sporting at 100 targets each or?????

I shoot sporting clays - typically every trip means 100-125 shots per visit. I do this 3-4 times/week, and I do this a minimum of 45 weeks per year, which means 15,000+ on average............any quality gun should be able to handle that amount

I was referring to a round of sporting clays in which you would shoot 100+ shots. Is this gun reliable enough to make it to the end without jamming? Anyone have any experience shooting sporting clays with an 1187 sportsman?

A couple guys who shoot skeet with me are using 11-87s and they go at least 4 rounds with no issues, probably more but I usually only do 4 at a time.

Short answer, yes. With some small parts replaced and PM, an 11-87 should last for decades of use.

I shoot sporting clays with a 1100 mate, and it's very reliable, indeed it's proving more reliable than my Benelli M2, and certainly less fussy about what shells I put through it.

And the 1100 is 25 years old too - go figure! :)
