I have an old 316b bolt action shotgun that had a piece of duct tape stuck to it.
I pulled it off and now the residue is, of course, on there.

What's a safe way to get it off of there without marring the finish.

Guru1911 here to help !!! Put a dab of peanut butter or cooking oil on a cotton rag. Rub until the residue lifts off & wipe away. Also try a spray of furniture polish on the spot, rub, & wipe off.

I use lighter fluid (Zippo) which is actually Naptha to remove stickers and glue. Doesn't seem to harm most surfaces including most plastics and removes most glue without leaving any residue. Nice tip too, Guru1911.

There is a commercial product sold in most grocery and hardware stores to remove residue like this.
I think it's called "Gum Off" or "Goo Gone".

You can also use a paper towel wetted with a little paint thinner or WD-40.

Gumout carb cleaner is excellent for removing tape residue. Can't say how it will affect wood finish.

I have used lighter fluid or Wd40 to remove gummy residue. I also have had alcohol or acetone (paint thinner) damage some finishes.

My cleaning fluids (in level of harshness) are:
o Windex
o Lighter fluid
o Rubbing alcohol
o Acetone (nail polish remover)

Well, it is a good bet that acetone will harm the finish. The others might or might not depending on what the finish is. I am surprised no one mentioned the cheap and easy "stuff" remover - gasoline. (As with most of the other solvents, use in a well ventilated area and keep away from flames.)
